I have tried several different anti-virus software programs in the past and finally settled on avast but lately it has been giving me problems.
I have been getting an error message when first rebooting windows and have to wait several minutes before it straightens out. I find this very annoying and it has come to the point that I think I will try another anti-virus program.
I have used norton in the past and I do not want norton or mcafee. I need something that checks my e-mail also. If anyone has any recommendations please feel free to let me know so I can get a better anti-virus program.

Hello Cableman......
The best antivirus program i would recommend is "Kaspersky total security", but as i don't want to use money for buying antivirus i prefer the free version of AVG antivirus. It is a good antivirus program, good deep scan with daily updates.
But from few days i am using Panda cloud antivirus. As i am regular visitor of Download.com i got chance to purchase "Panda cloud antivirus" for free. It was limited offer, check if you also can get it. Till now panda have not disappointed me, it has good set to virus definitions with daily updates and also is light weight.

Thanks for the info on the Panda antivirus. I have heard of it before but not in any detail. I also can download versions for free so I may give it a try. I want something that totally protects me but at the same time I need something lightweight. Thanks so much for the response.

I think kaspersky 2011 is better than any other anti virus .but it is a paid one . But inorder to know its cleaning capacity . Download a trail version of it from their website and later you can upgrade if you like it .

I tried Kaspersky once before and I can't remember why I removed it. I think I was getting too many false positives. I may try it again though because I believe it is a good program I may just need to get the settings right so they are not so sensitive. Thanks for your response

In the past I have used many different anti-virus software that have failed in protecting my computer fully. They were mostly free ones. I then decided to go for a paid version of McAfee+ that includes a firewall and (touch wood) I have never had a virus that has not been quickly dealt with Mcafee.
Before I decided to pay, I completely lost all my files on my hard-drive due to a nasty virus that a free version let through. So I have found that it is well worth a small charge to protect my files. Mcaffee updates every day since I've owned it, sometimes more than once day as it finds new threats out there on the Internet. _Derek

Try AVG Internet Security 2010 with full security protection for your windows operating system it has an anti spam and email scanner (MS Outlook) and also a firewall....
I used it for several weeks now since i have using avast anti virus free edition
the good thing of avast anti virus for me the most I encounter is having a a good
detection of an infected website where it can notify you a virus / malware has been
detected then prevent it from accessing..
I changed to AVG Internet Security since it infected my entire system including
the system Bios or the boot sector.....

I have Norton 2010, on my personal laptop it's a much improved version compared to their previous products so you might wanna give it another chance. I suggest you check reviews from tech sites to find the one most suited for you.

I use AVG...it is a free download. I had my computer into the guy and he said that he used AVG. So, I thought if it is good enough for the computer guy, then it is good enough for me.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, along with MalwareBytes and Spybot Search&Destroy because they work very well and they're all free and I haven't had any virus problems on my computer when I've used these programs.

If you are looking for a lighter anti virus that does not make your pc run slow why not try microsoft security essentials. I have been using it for almost a year now and it has really been protective, never crashes nor gives out any command error and the best part is that, it's free. For emails you may want to try avira antivirus, some say it's the ligghtest antivirus yet.
