If you prepare turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving, do you do it because you like turkey or because of tradition? Share your thoughts with us.

Artistry- We don't celebrate "Thanksgiving" in our house so no, I don't make it. I do cook it from time to time though. On the Day of Mourning I try to cook more traditional family foods to my father's people which I've been learning more and more about the more research he does. Having had recent generations (and I mean close, not those who lived in the 1600's but those who lived during the 1920-1970's)put in mental health asylums because they were Native and refused to speak English has completely changed my view on American Thanksgiving and opened up my eyes to the truth. A lot of the typical holiday foods aren't that far off but I also do things that match up with what I can find about what they ate, liked to eat etc. Last year I did a roast for that day along with breads, cakes, etc. It was very good, but our focus as our children get older (they are too young still) is to teach them about the history and tell them stories rather then focus on a very elaborate made up story to make someone feel better. Of course, most on my father's side have passed away so I'm having to learn from those outside my own blood line, but in my eyes we're all family and I'll take the Grandmothers that have stepped into that role. ...Hi Anora_Eldorath, Thanks so much for your response. Very interesting information. What is your Day of Mourning? It sounds like you are a good cook and like food, as does your family. It is very interesting to read about your effort to inform the children about the family history and culture. I think that you need to know from where you came to determine where you are going. Thanks so much for sharing. Take good care.

I always make turkey on Thanksgiving. I love it. I like preparing it. I love the smell of it while it cooks. And, of course, I like to eat it. Lots of leftovers so I get to eat it again. when it is on sale, which happens at odd times during the year, I will buy it, so we may have turkey in April.

...Hi trruk1, I was just wondering if people who prepare turkey on Thanksgiving do so only because turkey is usually the meal of the holiday along with maybe Christmas. Or if they cook it because they like turkey? I like turkey especially the stuffing and cranberry sauce. I also love pumpkin pie. Sounds as though you like turkey, the smell is aromatic and somehow makes a house seem like a home when it is cooking. Thanks so much for your response. Enjoy your meal and your holiday. Take care.
