I watch foreign movie sometimes, but I usually like to watch made by USA s, because I need to practise my listening English, but seem still I try hard to not use the subtitles, but hardly to understand what the actors says sometimes, what about you? I like to watch Korean movies too, but I 100% need the subtitles, because I do not understand Korean at all, on this time I wish I understand their language so I can just easily to enjoy the movie not always watch the subtitles, What about you? Do you like to watch movies with subtitles?

Hello! I am a brazilian who's been studying english for almost my intire life. My favorite movies are american and british and I do use the subtitles for the simplest reason of all: we never know everything. First, I did as you mentioned. I trained my audio skills first. Once I had it ok, I added the subtitles in portuguese to be sure if I could really understand it. Now with dvds its even better cause you can choose the legends. I often listen to the movie and read the legends in english. Don't give up studying with movies!!! It is really a very pleasent and effective way of learning. My best wishes to you.

My English is not that good, so I have to depend on the subtitle when I watch an American movie. They have so many slangs and I can't really get it. As to other foreign movies, be sure I have to read its subtitle because I don't know other foreign languages besides English. I love China

oh yeah, have so many slangs in some of the foreign movies, sometimes I need to write it down and ask my western friends that means if I do not understand their meanings

There are some fine foreigns films for us to see. it can just be a bit bothersome to do so. I find that if I watch a foreign film with subtitles, i spend more of my time reading the screen than being inolved in the film itself. Sometimes I feel as if i was just reading a book instead.

oh that is kinds of same stuff ;-) A novel tells you the story by reading characters,A foreign movie with subtitles speaks their language and you read their stories ;-) with some music too haha

I like watching movies in their original languages, but it's impossible for me to be able to speak all of the existing languages in the world, so yes, I use subtitles. It's true that reading subtitles is time consuming and you can't look at the movie as much as when you just understand straight what the actors and actresses say, but it's worse if you don't understand at all what's going on because of the language barrier.

yeah, I agreed with your point, the subtitles helps us a lot,If we do not understand their native language, if with out the subtitles we never understand what that movie meanings.that would be get worse. But if i do not understand it,then I will not waste my time to watch it,hehe actually I think it's good to watch some of the foreign movies, because we can get to know their cultures sometimes and their beautiful buildings, tables, lakes ect , ha I always pay attendtion on this stuff when I watch a foreign movie. ;-)

In India English is a foreign language and I love English movies. If they have the sub-titles, it is okay. For the non-english movies(even regional movies) that we rarely get to see on DVD or otherwise, It is best to have the sub-titles. But I have a feeling that these subtitles kill the interest of the movie. Cheers, theSids

I don't really mind too much. I prefer movies in English, my native language of course, but I occasionally watch movies in Spanish and German, with subtitles. But it sounds like you watch them all the time, movies with subtitles. So if I watched movies with subtitles as often as you do, perhaps I too would be tired of it.

My brother and I have a LOT of Japanese animation on dvd. What we usually do is watch it without the subtitles. This way, we appreciate the art and the visuals. Then the next day, we watch it again but this time with subtitles, so at least we'll get the story. Then we watch it a third time with the English audio. By then, we'll have seen the small nuances in the story, and notice things that we missed during the first and second viewing. I know someone who learned to speed read just by watching Japanese anime. If you allow yourself to be challenged, you can adapt to read fast enough to enjoy the movie! :)

Hey that is great as I have never heard someone mention that it is a great way to practice their English. As for me though I cannot stand watching any types of foreign movies with subtitles as funny thing I am Hispanic and very Spanish Fluent, but if I watch a Spanish movie with English subtitles, I end up reading and not being able to concentrate fully on the actual movie as it is distracting for me. Maybe because my English is also very fluent. But I will have to remember this next time someone asks who to practice the English language.

I don't mind subtitles, over here, all movies have them, so I got used to them. In fact, a few years back there was a huge discussion when television stopped using subtitles for cartoons (because they decided to make them more friendly for children who couldn't read - the general public thought that this is actually the best way for children to start learning both reading and English). The main advantage of subtitles is that you can hear the voice of the original actors, and thus you can evaluate their performance better.

oh yeah, that is hilarious sometimes ;-) sometimes those subtitles shows different meaning of what the actor really says, too that is why i like to understand the language while I am watching the movie. and I can enjoy it not always reading while I am watch a movie.

Yeah watching while reading it,that is what I really dislike ;-) I would prefer to understand the language then I only enjoy to watch the movie,I do not need to always to watch the characters, If I do not watch the characters then I do not know what they are talking about, sometimes need to do some thing around the house, then need to stop it,while I come back, then I play it again,If i do not do it,I will miss the part which while I was way, hehe
