When something is only $0.01, why don't people write 1 cent rather than $0.01? Is it because the cent character is not part of the standard keyboard, or something else?

You know that is just one of those things that I have just quite frankly accepted and not question too much. It is just one of those things that one does not think about, they just go with the flow. There are a lot of things about how things are written that just do not really make sense. I do think that you might be onto something with the cent character not being part of a keyboard.
Then again, it could just be a uniformed way. Its a decimal system after all. One hundreth of a dollar. If you wrote out one hundreth in decimal form, it would come out to 0.01 after all. Therefore a dollar sign has just been tagged in front of it. It is one of those things where just go with the flow, that's what I have to say about the issue of the 1 cent.

For me, I would prefer to use $0.01 rather than 1 cent. It's because we are able to see real figures as to what amount we expect. This might be one reason why it's used in marketing because values and variables should be in real-time. It's easier also for me to understand and read rather than say 1 cent of a dollar. See, if we write $0.01 then it's automatically understood because we are able to visualize already what it looks like rather saying than 1 cent of a dollar. Well, this is just according to my preferences.

Well I really like if they put $0.01 and not like cent. Because some websites will list something like 1/4 of a cent or 1/10 of a cent which is really confusing.

That's a more of international standard. Even though English is widely spoken and written, it does not mean that everyone on the web knows or speaks English. Using the word "cent" may not be appropriate for these users. But given arabic numbers such as $0.01, it's understood across different languages. Then you may ask, some sites are strictly English-speaking, then there is no such issue. But there may also be people using translator to go on these sites so "cent" may not be translated properly in some languages.

it's used to be clear as possible, and it helps with the key words for the site at the same time.
