Have you ever had a snail mail penpal?

I recently bought some old magazines from the 50's, because I am looking for pictures for my art. In the magazines there is a kind of penpalclub where the readers can send in their address and some stamps and then they will receive the address of another person who is looking for a penpal, usually a person from another country. I like the idea a lot and I think it is nice way to find friends from other countries.
Now we have access to the internet and it is not different to get in touch with people from other parts of the world, but at that time (in the 50's) that option didn't exist. If I had been young at that time I would definately have joined that penpalclub, because I have always been interested in writing to people from around the world. I have had many penpals when I was younger and I have also met some of them. It was a great way to practice a foreign language and learn about other cultures. We sometimes exchanged pitures, postcards and small presents.
Did you had any snail mail penpals in the past? From your own country or from other countries? Where did you find your penpals?

I had a penpal when I was in grade school. She was a friend of my nanny and was curious about life in the city because she lived in the far-flung countryside. It did not go for long and I don't know what stopped our correspondence.

That is one of the positive things about penpals - you can learn more about a different part of the country like city/countryside or you can learn more about another country if you have international penpals. I remember one penpal from my own country, I sometimes found it hard to understand the words that she wrote because she had a different dialect and I had to ask my mother to "translate" it for me, but she introduced me to an different lifestyle and that was interesting.

Yes. But, technology is great. Now these can be done and at a much faster rate - e-mail, text, chat...and myLot! No more waiting for the mailman for a week or a month, or sometimes more. :)

hi porcospino!
yeah! when i as in high school i remember having a penpal, actually i have two pen pals that time, one is from my on country but from a different region and the other one is from other country, if I remember it right she's from Germany.
the one from my country, i found her in a song magazine and i just rote to her for a try, i am very glad when she replied to my letter and we exchanged pictures. its just sad that we lose contacts after, but our exchange of letters lasts for almost a year i think.
the one from other country, its my grandmother who gave her address to me and she asked me to wrote to the girl and i do, we have fun exchanging letters and sending pictures and news about our own countries, but just like my other pen friend, for some reasons we lose contacts, maybe we just become both busy with our studies.
by the way, i also got a chance being a pen friend to the daughter of my grandmother's employer in HongKong.
its fun and exciting to receive letters from those people that I just come to know through letters because, even if e just talk through mails, i can still feel their sincerity and found a friend on them.

that's one thing i didn't try doing, posting my own name on magazines, maybe because i don't know how...hehe
anyway, its a good thing that we have experienced those things in our younger years...things that will always be part of our good memories of the past.

I had a penpal in my school days. it was a school project. Since then, I have never had a penpal snail mail or otherwise. It would be nice to have one though. sometimes we all need someone to share our thoughts with.

I also got my first international penpal through my school. My English teacher knew another teacher who wanted penpals for her students, and that way I got a penpal from Ireland. We kept in touch for a long time and I was very happy, because many of the my classmates never received an reply or received just a few letters from their penpal. Yes, it is nice to have someone to share our thoughts with, that is one of the things that I like about penpals and it is also a great way to learn something about other lifestyles and other parts of the world if our is penpal from another country.

Hello Porcospino,
Yes, when I was little I use to have penpals. One was my dad vendor daughter from gremany. When we hit teenage years she came over for a visit and the following year I visted her family in Germany. At that time it was West Germany but now since the Berlin Wall has fallen it all Germany again. I also had local penpals I use to write too but we lost touch or they moved or I went to college etc. I am in 40 now and miss those days of writing. Remeber when stamps were like a .25 a piece.
Thanks and Have a great day

It is nice that you got the chance to meet your penpal from Germany. Sometimes I also miss the time when I had penpals. I had some penpals from my own country, but most of them were from other countries. Every time I got back from school I made a beeline for the mailbox and I was always excited when there was a letter from one of my penpals. Today I don't rush to the mailbox, because it is usually full of bills instead of letters from friends

I did. Twice actually, when I was taking spanish I had one. We stayed in touch for about a year and a half, then i got two letters back saying that she had moved and that there was not a forwarding address. I thought about her for a while. hoped that nothing was wrong, and then moved on.
I had one for a year in fifth grade. We had penpals with another fifth grade class that was in another state. It was all part of a class assignment. my pen pal was not very responsive.

I have also experienced getting my letters back with a note saying that my penpal had moved and I wasn't able to get in touch with her again. I was sad because we been penpals for several years and I couldn't help thinking about her afterwards. I hoped that she was just too busy with other things to write and that she didn't stop writing because something was wrong.
I got my first international penpal at school. It is wasn't a class assignment like in your case, but my English teacher knew a teacher from Ireland and she wanted to find some Danish penpals for her students. Our teacher told us about the other teacher and her students and those of us who were interested got a penpal from Ireland.

Hi Porcospino!
Oh yeah! i had plenty of snail mail penpal when i was on my High School and some of them til i was in College. We exchange photos but was able to met 1 of them only. We were like writing for about 4years. Some of them courted me, but that time i dont believe in long distance relationship.
It was nice writing someone, it has a personal touch. I still do send letters to some of my close friend especially during christmas time especially those that are far from thier family and is working abroad.

I also like to write letters to my friends around christmas time, but aside from that I don't write that many letters anymore. In the past I always had stamps in the house, and now I only buy stamps around christmas time, the rest of the time I usually write emails instead...It is fast and easy to send emails, but sometimes I miss those handwritten letters decorated with drawings, stickers etc
