Why don't we dispose of food scraps in a seperate bin as we do with recyclables?

Hello fellas It is always good to reduce our wastage of food and we should do our possible to save food as much as we can. There are lots of different forums working on this and increasing awareness among people regarding hunger around the world, but still it is a big problem. We have seen a lots of food or organic material going to waste. But some time I think that why don't we dispose of food scraps in a seperate bin as we do with recyclables, especially with this new push towards ethanol and going green and more landfills outgrowing themselves. It's depressing to think about how much organic waste is dumped in landfills when it could be composted or put to better use. Since we've started charging for town trash bags where I live we've seen a huge increase in recycling. I really doubt the people recycling already would complain about another bin when it could save them even more money on their trash bill while providing compost material and possibly ethanol. What do you think about this Have a lovely day...:)

Australia has the best disposable system. Every home has two huge bins, one for all those food scraps which is colored in green and other bin is colored in yellow is for throwing in recyclable stuff like bottles, plastics and cardboard papers. The council will come round to collect the thrash every Tuesday and the recyclables twice a month. It keeps the environment clean with those unused stuff disposed off while those recyclables are recycled for other purposes.

Wow, what a good system they have and I think that system should be followed to manage our food waste and to keep our environment clean. After starting this discussion and listening to my respondents, I ll definitely ask my hostel management to put another bin for waste food, because it is always mixed with other scrap and this ll be a very good idea to compost it and then we can reuse that waste...:) Have a wonderful day...:) Thanks for response dear Zandi

In Nova Scotia we seperate our garbage into four catergories. Two for recycables (one for paper and the other for plastics), third for compost (mainly food scraps) and fourth for other. The compost during a spring weekend, we can get it back and put it on our gardens. To read more goto http://www.rrfb.com

For the compost they provide two bins. One fits under the sink and when it gets full it gets emptied into a larger one. The larger is kept outside and is on wheels. It is about the size of a regular garbage can.

This is very nice to hear from you and yes this practice is always there mean separation but my point was can we put another bin just like for papers, plastic, glass etc, can we put a waste food bin at our home or any other place, so we could reduce the burden of separation and also we ll come to know how much food we are putting into wastage...:) Thanks you very much, I ll definitely visit this website, but remember when you post a website, always write that it is not referral link to reduce chances of being deleted...:) have a nice day...:)

I am happy to hear from you that you are part of this process, yes i agree with you that we need some thing to do for world hunger, I think as I am doing over here, I always separate a very small amount of money from my pay and I always give it to the charity every month as that charity is taking care of orphans, this is also contribution to world hunger. I have this idea first I need to look up around me and help them, although the amount which I give to them is not good it can only meet the food need of one person for two or three days but I am still doing it, its better to act instead of watching miserable condition of people around you...:) Have a nice day...:)

I have just seen your post while looking for others about compost. You are right: we must separate our waste. It is incredible the amount of food scraps that can go to a compost bin and not only save on trash bill (we don´t have that item in our country) but serve as plant food after it´s made into compost. A trash can with holes is all it´s needed to make a nice compost bin and the end product will help grow beautiful tomatoes in your garden even in containers. If we all did it, it would mean a lot for the planet. Have a nice day!

Hello Dear Marguicha You really shared very good information and the method of making a compost. I agree with your suggestions and comments, we should try to reduce our food wastage and should try to compost the remaining waste. Thanks for response and contribution to the discussion Have a nice day...:)

When I first started in the catering industry 40 years ago we always had 'pig swill' bins that all the food scraps went in and it was bought by pig farmers. But after foot and mouth disease came in Britain in 2010 and it was believed to have started because of feeding swill to pigs this practise was stopped.

Hi Old Chem Yeah, you are right that there are some draw back but the draw backs are not the idea, it is in the ultimate use of the idea, waste food can be used as a compost or for energy production purpose. I think the idea is good, the application of idea in a good manner is required...:) right? Have a nice day....:)

Personjally I have no probhlem with recycling food waste. Firstly i have very little, I ensure that I use up as much as I can in our meals - making dishes with good left over foods, any thing else(like peelings etc) is either eaten by my hamster and tortoise, used to feed our local wildlife or put on the compost heap.

Hi Old Chem Yes, I agree with you, we should have cook or take the amount of meal/food according to our requirement, should avoid wastage of food as much as possible, it is the first and important step. I really appreciate your green practice at home and we all should follow this type of practice at our home or at our meal time...:) Have a nice day a head...:)

In the UK food and food scraps can be recycled. But you can do some basic things at home. Take eggshells, don'e throw the out ground it up and put it in your garden. Start a community compost and a garden. I feed my dogs and cats my food bits like rice and peas and meat...no bones with their cat and dog food. I can't say much for raw meats bits. but our food waste should be treated responsibly and we should try to use as much of it as we can

I know if I did not live in an apartment I would have a compost pile. I would also have some sort of garden though too! I think it is good to recycle virtually every thing we can to keep it from being dumped in the heaps of trash!

We actually have something like that here. It's a great idea, I don't use it though. My husband thinks it's not practical.

Hi Dog Lady Thanks for response, its very good that you are practicing this thing but you also said that your husband dont think that it practical, I think you should study about composting of organic matter and composting is not from now or modern technique it is in practice from hundards of years, but we came to know lately and now we are able to compost and then use this compost for different purposes specially in our villages compost are used as fertilizers So I think there is no problem with this the need is to get some initiative.. Have a nice day...:)

Hiya saqi, Love that avatar such a vibrant colour really nice. I too wish we had that system here to recycle Food as well. Sometimes you can cook too much without realizing it. After all you can´t take into account that your Family at least two members will not feel like eating very much that Day or they have already been snacking in the Bars or elsewhere. End result is that you have to throw away the Food because you cannot freeze it either. Would you freeze Chips that are already fried? Of course not so there are foods for example lettuce that the outside leaves are not suitable at all for eating. In England the waste food used to go into the Garden in a compost heap at the back and it was used to grow Tomatoes and other things later on. Here there are so many Flats this is impossible to do. They should bring out some kind of service I think after all no one wants to be without a Garden but sometimes they have no choice. In the Centre of the City they have a waste pipeline under the ground that collects loads of different wastage but they forget that not everyone can go up to the Centre of the City. It´s really a great idea but what about all the People in the Villages they cannot keep going up to the City itself to dispose of rubbish. Never mind someone will come up with a great idea and I hope it´s sooner than later.

I always assume it something along the lines of the food going bad. I am not to sure.
