I just finshed my Maths GCSE today and we had a little celebratory party at our maths lesson to mark the end of our GCSE Maths work! Yay! We took it early because the school thought that the top set should all manage this so we can then prepare for our A-levels by doing A-level maths during our maths lessons.
Last year, all the people you took Maths early in our school all got A* (for people who are not familiar with the Engish grading, A* is the best grade you can possibly get). So, we are all expected to get an A* otherwise we have failed in our teacher's eyes, not too much pressure then! =(
So, I was wondering how all you myLotters did with your maths exams. Did you get the grade you wanted?

I did very poorly in math in school and it wasn't because I didn't try! Still I ended up in banking, then mortgage, then investment banking. Maybe it was because they should have had the $ sign in front of the numbers on the test! All kidding aside it was the curriculum, not me.

Oh cool shows you how you can always get better at things that you are not initially as good at. =)

I am a Math major though I pass all my Math subjects I am not that satisfied, I know I can do better than that but since I hate Math and the numbers when I was studying I was not putting too much effort in it. But after teaching I found out that Math is easy if you just focus, and learn the basics.

So even though you hated maths and numbers, you still chose to do a major in maths? Why did you choose this?
I'm glad you like maths more now though =)

All of my close friends chose Math to be their Major. I hate to admit that I don't want to be left behind. So even though I love English I enrolled in math major so that I can be with my friends.

During my schooldays, I do have some good grades on my math subjects. But there were also those that I really had difficulty with. What I really find difficult was calculus and geometry. But the great thing is, I never failed in any math subject in my school time.

Yeah I don't really like geometry either just because I know I will porbably never need it again because I have no aspirations for becoming an architect. But what I really dislke about maths is circle theorums. Why do we need to know that the angle in a traingle at the circumference of a semi-cirlce is right angle? No one is going to come up to me and say "Oh sorry, excuse me but how do you work out the size of angle x, does it matter that it is in a cyclic quadrilateral?". Nope, never going to happen and never going to be needed in my future job.

Ever since I was young, I loved numbers. I especially adored my math teacher at that time. I was really attentive at class, studied my lessons well and so I did good in my exams or worksheets. I believe that excelling at something should not only come from a lot of effort but also passion. I really believe that passion would be the best weapon one can possess when doing something. Do you agree with me?

I think if you want to excell in something so much that you want to make a career of it, then of course you do need passion for it. But you don't necessarily need a lot of passion to do well at school. I personally like numbers but don't have passion for it like I do with philosophy.

Well, back here in NY, we have to take Math Regents exams. I've done really good on them, getting about five A scores, and only one B score. The rigid curriculum in NY has really trained me, and I have been good in mathematical accuracy as well. After I graduated high school, my next school was Harvard University, where I majored in Engineering and an Economics Minor. There is a lot of maths in that field, because engineering requires physics, calculus, statistics, and advanced numeral courses. These courses may have required work, but I did really great in them. My last four course weren't as good, because I received to B's, one A- and one A. That isn't so bad, because Harvard's grading curve is a bit more competitive. Chocoholicx, its really great of you to share this information, and I look forward to reading your entries. Lets be friends, okay?

Wow! You went to Harvard University?? Isn't that currently the second best (previous best in 2009) university in the world?!?! If I do really well in my GCSEs and I feel ambitious, I'm hoping to get into the University of Cambridge although I'm not going to get my hopes up too high. The likelihood of me getting in are very slim.
Did you enjoy your courses then? And do you currently have an engineering related job then?
And sure lets be friends =) But I'm afraid I won't be able to find out my results for another few months, so it will have to be a bit of a wait.

Did you then try to chase a maths-related career then? Yeah I know, I still think its amazing how people like pythagorus have found hidden maths secrets to help us today.

There are a lot discussion around the world with the topics related to hating or liking "mathematics". Most of the successful people(who hated it earlier), found it easier and it is very natural. I was also like one of those. I took a challenge, and now I chose to study astronomy and be an astronomer and maybe one day, I will be joining NASA!

Wow, I've always thought astronomy to be such a fascinating subject just because its probably the most actively developing subject because we keep finding more and more stars and planets. I hope you do achieve your dream of joining NASA! =)
