hey guys! here i am again posting something about religion. please take it easy when you reply. i believe mylot is a friendly community. =)
i was curious on how my professor woul answer my friend's questions.
my friend asked:
do you believe in God?
Do you believe God is Good?
Do you believe God i Powerful?
then why can't He make all people good if He is good and powerful?
do you believe in heaven and hell? and that there are souls coming back? then why don't these souls tell the living ones what the truth is about God?
my professor made a very short answer at the last question saying that like the people God also has a secret only He knows.

Suppose I were your professor I might answer something like this:
1. I believe in God.
2. I believe God is good.
3. I believe God is powerful.
And regarding the question at the footnote, I would say that the fact that God is powerful does not mean He would do something contradictory. That is not the way "powerful" is defined by believers in God all throughout centuries. For example, God cannot exist and not exist simultaneously because existence and non-existence at the same time does not make sense as an idea; just because words are there that does not make the word meaningful. Being square and being circle at the same is another example or married bachelor is another one. Now freewill of human being and powerful nature of God are also something like that.

btw, it sounds like from your argument that "married bachelor" doesn't exist because it is a contradiction, and that you say that "freewill of human beings and powerful nature of God" is a contradiction - hence doesn't exist. Sorry if I missed something, but does that mean we don't have freewill, as you said that God is powerful?
And another random question, do you think God created ideas? Like that something cannot exist and not exist at the same time.
thanks. =)

greetings Joe, I couldn't resist answering.. I guess to me the question is, if I, or you, were God, would it be best to endow thinking ability? or not to ever endow thinking ability, anytime, anywhere? It's a real Pandora's box, for with thinking ability comes the ability to make choices.. And then what? Let it all run its course? Or constantly interfere? And if constantly interfering, what or where then comes choice or why bother.. If there's a deity, said deity can only be Perfect, otherwise they too would not endure but would fade and disintegrate. Therefor, since the deity can only be perfect, the 'end' result of all this (human history, etc) can only be the best one possible (regardless of any misinterpretations we have heard along the way, namely "hell" which should have been translated "the grave", which only came about because the deity can only be Life, the life force itself (who, what else could be?) therefor to make a choice other than the deity, is to become imperfect the opposite of life, therefore God is said to have built the rescue into everything from the beginning, according to my own religion of course, which btw is christianity, yet not churched, but study (deeply and prayerfully) on my own. Sorry to ramble on so.

I certainly we human have freewill. There is something called square, and something called circle. But there is nothing called square-circle. I don't think something that exists and not exist at the same time is an idea. It's just words that don't make sense. For example, if I say wooo haa waaa you'd say they are just words, not ideas.

I'll take it easy on you - but please don't take it easy on me. I want criticism and other people's views and opinions.
I do not believe that God exists. There are too many arguments against it, and too much subjectivity (it varies too much from person to person, culture to cultrue, without any way of telling what is 'right') around religion in general.
It is also impossible to prove that God exists, just as it is impossible to prove that he doesn't exist. But does that mean I should believe in an asteroid made out of chocolate that is going to hit the world in around 30 years..? I mean, I have no prove for it - but I CAN'T disprove it!! I'd love that to happen, so should I believe in it? =)
Can anyone give me an objective (something not individual and open to bias, like prayers and the feeling you get from the bible) reason why I should believe?
In many ways, I feel that believe in God would make the world an unhappy place. Don't you feel that? I mean, we're all just what ever God wants us to be. I am good only if God says so. I am loved only if God planned it. I see suffering and have to look the other way, telling myself desperately that there's a reason for it. If I want to change anything, I am limited by what God limits me to. =/
Hmmm, but yea... I don't want to be too critical of people's religions; I always feel like I will upset people, or make them think that I'm a mean person - sorry if that comes across guys.
Thanks for the time. =)

Oh my, this is so interesting!!! Can I just ask, what do you mean that it is impossible to prove that God does exist and vice versa? What are those arguments if I may ask? I love talking about these things and I sure am looking forward to a meaningful and respectful discussion. :D

Well, unless he is theologically trained, his answer may not have much currency. For me, man needs religion. Man has always been in need. Man has always been fearful. Man knows that God exists because as a human being he cannot understands the beauty of nature and the life support systems that give life to all human beings, animals and plants. He cannot understand the balance of nature. He knows the Maker exists.

So do you believe that the maker is in one of the religions already out there..? Or that ancient cave man had it right? Or that we are all searching for an answer that was designed not to be found? =)

Many years ago when I read the bible I looked on it as a book of teachings. You must remember that the bible and other religious text, for example the Koran, came about when the majority could not read or write, the teachings were handed down until enough people could read to make a book a more functional way of getting the teachings to many more people. This seems to be the way for many of the religions I have studied.
Now whether the original teachings came from a God or not is all down to personal belief and faith, there are many religions on this earth who seem to worship their own God, does this mean there are many Gods, or is there only one and its all down to how the original scripts have been translated or handed down, we all know about the game Chinese whispers, where a sentence is passed by mouth from one person to another down a long chain and at the end of the chain the original sentence has dramatically changed. So are the teachings still in their original form.
There are many people in this world who allow their faith to guide their lives, their actions and deeds, and I find it very hard to belief that a God who is good and powerful would have created a world that is so unstable and dangerous, I live my life following the philosophy of do unto others as you would do unto yourself.
I have also looked at the evolution theory which too leaves me undecided, the best I can personally come up with is to continue living the way I am, and if there is a God and he is not pleased with me then he will show me the way, if he has not already,so I will continue to help people and hopefully my good deeds will rub of and guide others and maybe one day we will all know one way or the other.
