Don't touch my junk

So a guy wants to fly, decided he'd rather deal with a metal detector and a pat down than a full body scan. Then declines the pat down when he finds out that it includes the groin area. So he's predictably not allowed to fly, but he's also told that he could face a lawsuit and a fine for not completing the security check. http://www.aolnews.com/discuss/airport-security-encounter-dont-touch-my-junk-john-tyner-tells-agent/19716789#gcpDiscussPageUrlAnchor Come on now. You can't decline either procedure and leave the airport and decide to drive without having to worry about a lawsuit and a fine? Ok I suppose he could have had something concealed there that they didn't want him to leave the airport with, but I rather doubt it. Sounds like he was being a bit of a jerk, but a $10,000 fine? Really?

Almost sounds like it's not worth the hassle to fly! I bet a lot of people are choosing alternate routes these days. I do hope to take a trip in the coming year where I'd need to fly.. but maybe if bus and train security aren't as tight I'll consider those options before flying. I'm really not fond of the idea of someone touching my privates who isn't a doctor or my husband!

I think I can be OK with the body scan. The whole pat down thing bothers me though. If I was flying with one of my kids, I'd be in their face if they wanted to do a pat down on a child.

I have been in airflights with a friend who had open heart surgery. She is full of wires that sound. She is my angel friend but they treat her as if she was the devil, in spite of the big scar.

If you can keep your clothes on for the body scan.. I may consider it. It's certainly something I'll have to look into before deciding my mode of transportation!

I prefer to have the scan, but worry about the radiation for those who fly frequently. I know how a pat down works, and have been trained to do them. I do not want one. I have not flown in years. I probably won't either.

X rays add up. I think this is a free standing booth, and that the scanner operator is not really near it. I know that pilots and other air line employees have expressed some concerns.

I'd rather have the scan too. I only travel a few times a year, so I'm not worried about the radiation...

I don't understand what the charge would be in a civil suit if he just leaves the airport without completing the security check. What law would he be breaking? I mean, it's not like he's still attempting to get on the plane. Geez. Hey, I'll go with the patdown any day, any time, any way! Might actually feel good! You never know 'til you have it done, right? So what if the security agent is getting a thrill, too? I get "felt up" so infrequently these days.

Maybe they're going to sue him for their time or something. If it's a civil suit, it can't be that he's broken a law. They'd just arrest him, no questions asked.

We just have to put up with it if we want to fly and we cannot make jokes about it either. 'They' don't like jokes. I would have the full body scan any time over pat down. Regretfully, I honestly do not not why - I am the one pulled out of a line and searched and searched again. Always get the final search right at the gate before boarding the plane. wouldn't you think that they would leave a grandmother alone? The fine seems kind of steep though. The flight could not have been necessary. I always thought that a terrorist would contaminate the city's water supply than bomb a plane.

@Cynthiann, if you do yarn work, and have it with you, they may be afraid you are making an afghan.I know, bad joke. (For those who do not have English as a primary language, and afghan is a knit or crochet blanket. Grandmas are supposed to knit.)

Nope, they are not allowed to have a sense of humor about that job. Yeah, I'd think they'd leave a grandmother alone, but then you'd think they'd leave a 7 year old child alone too. When we were living in LA and Dearra was up here staying with her grandmother, she flew back home with Richard. Because she was flying one way, they selected her for a pat down. He convinced them that doing that to a 7 year old child was not a good idea. Really, I think it's just a random thing, and sometimes when they see who the person is, they will respond with common sense if they are asked politely.

They are very strict about everything now. I don't understand what the big deal is, get padded and go on your way. He must have been hiding something if not he did not have to fly probably. People that I seen get padded down had nothing to hide, I think this guys is hiding something.

I don't think he was hiding anything, I think he just wanted to make a point. But hell, I'd take a body scan over a pat down any day of the week!

I have nothing to hide, but I won't fly because I refuse to go through either. @Ekob..... You shouldn't assume that someone has something to hide just because they want their privacy. He told them not to "touch his junk or" he would have that security officer arrested. That security officer then insisted on calling a supervisor over and it escalated from there. People who commit terrorist acts simply want us to live in fear, and I refuse to let them win by subjecting myself to such unncessary paranoia and bullsh*t.

hi dawnald wow I would have just settled for the full body s can as I dont like the idea of some man coping a feel under the pretense of looking for terrorists weapons lol. I am really seriously wondering what would happen if they scan me as I have an artificial shoulder joint made of steel and plastic. this was done because I had a terrible fall three years ago and landed on my left shoulder. I smashed the bones in my shoulder. hence the need toconect muscles and nerves to a bionic joint. wou d I set off the alarm? and I could not remove this either as this was a surgical procedure. guess I will take buses or trains instead. I really think they went overboard on that huge fine.

hi dawn now days with the airport officials being so very particular I bet I would not be allowed to fly. I cannot remove the steel and plastic shoulder replacement as its being placed there and stitched in place in surgey three years go. so I would go up the beep would go off and I would have to go into the details of a shoulder joint replacement. I think that the then thousand dollar fine was going overboard.Last time I made the stupid machine beep because my bra had an underwire in tt. so they made me go with a matron to undress and show her that bra with its under-wire. it angered mt to the point I decided to not fly but go by Greyhound Bus instead. I hate flying anyway. I am totally a flying coward and go with white knuckles all the way there as though I have to keep the plane up in the air. lol lol

That is crazy! He didn't end up flying anyways, so I don't see what the problem is, and yes a $10,000 fine is crazy as well. If you ever sit at an airport and watch airport security it is a joke. This past summer, my middle son (14 at the time) was flying to my sister in Chicago. Because he was a minor, I was able to go with him all the way to the gate. I went through security without a problem, but they gave Vince a hard time. They had to go through his bag (which he was just taking a carry on). It has his playstation console in it and a few games along with his clothes. They searched all that, thoroughly. Had to special wand through the console and still started questioning him about the games and pulled through all his stuff in the meantime. I stood there, biting my tongue the entire time. When he finally got through, we had to repack his bag up as his stuff was all messed up and his clothes all unfolded. I repacked his bag, while he put his shoes and belt back on. I was so upset I sat down on the chairs for a bit to calm down. All the while watching other people that REALLY looked shady go through security without a problem. Why in the world would you just pick on a 14 year old kid, but other people that I probably would have searched, went through without a problem. The joke is out of all my kids, Vince is the quite one, doesn't fit the bill of a rough looking teenagers, come on! Vince said he will never fly again. That was his first and last time on a plane. He said it isn't worth all the trouble, and quite frankly, I agree.

They want to throw their weight around? Or just let him know not to waste their time? I don't know why they mess with minors like that though. lack of common sense, I think...

I thought that a person ultimately had the decision about whether they flew or drove or even took a boat to their destination. If that is the case, why should it be that this man could face a huge fine like that because he did not want to comply with the security procedures. So, I can't help but ask, what next? Is the next thing going to be security checkpoints with metal detectors and full body scans at every state border?

I am taking a flight this Wednesday, and I will let you know if someone dares touch my sweet stuff, as I do not consider it to be junk. Certainly I will not allow myself to be fined, but it depends on how much they think they will be touching as well that is only for privilege people if you ask me.

I heard about this on the news as well and it's really annoying to me. I fly back and forth to go to school and it bothers me that I might have to either go through a scanner that lets people see my genitals or be felt up in an invasive pat down. I didn't have a problem with the previous pat downs and scans I went through, but the newer measures bother me. They have the right to use the front of their hands between my legs and I just don't think that's right. Obviously, when I travel now I'm going to have to see which one is the lesser evil. I understand wanting to protect the traveling masses, but how much privacy do I have to sacrifice for this? It's a bit frustrating, honestly.

Honestly, like the one lady said I can understand for security reasons with the underwear bomber and all. However, I don't want some strange person in uniform touching me in places only my hubby or a Dr are allowed KWIM? I don't think I'd like the scan much either but atleast they are not physically touching you. I can't see hitting him w/ a 10,000 fine over it. Or was that his fine for disorderly conduct or sorts perhaps? We'll keep on driving if we go somewhere instead of flying too much hassel.

I wonder if he was embarrassed that his fly might be undone and that the checker might notice and tell him "No fly. No fly". Better to keep it zipped or buttoned I think. Just in case something shocking slips out.

Boy, that IS steep! They probably thought "the act" was suspicious - and that's why they fine him so he won't ever try again. That's all I could think of anyway. Or airports are even hard up - they gotta find ways to bring in the moola. ????? That's crazy!

This proves how ridiculous airport security has become. Was it an internal flight? If so, it's even more ridiculous. I can't stand flying anymore, it's become a joke and a laborious process. There are people travelling on other modes of transport all the time so why are airports singled out? After the Madrid bombings it was decided it would be unworkable to check everyone that travels by train so why should it be different with aircraft? I realise there was 7/7 (and the loss of life is regrettable, of course it is) but people still go about their daily business on London's Underground system without any problems. It would be impossible to check everybody and no-one would get to work or back home again! I have only been to America twice and absolutely hated the security checks..both in the UK and America. I know they are necessary but why can't they pick out people at random (rather like the "have you anything to declare" thingy for the tax)? When the IRA was bombing everywhere we didn't have all this security, why have it now? I'm sorry, but I'm with the guy on this issue. Security has got out of hand in my opinion. Sorry to rant but I feel very strongly about airport security. It used to be a joy to fly..not anymore.

the fine really is extreme and so wrong, at the end of the day you do have to be careful and think of others so a full body check is needed and is right, no he possibly wasn't carrying anything, but hey you never know do you. Yes he does sound like a bit of a jerk but the fine is so very very wrong.
