Do people read poetry these days? If they do is it purely the works of well known authors or do they read on one of the many poetry sites online that have a plethera of budding, some very good and some very bad poets?

I actually read poetry online through blogs and I write as well. I believe there are no bad poet for in their own rights, they have the write to speak up through freedom of speech. Poetry is an outlet of a poet. Because there just words that are hard to be spoken. ;)

i will grant you that, there are no bad poets, i guess it was just a term many use and i shouldnt have. I also agree its important for people to actually let out what they think and if poetry is the vehicle they choose to use i think thats wonderful. Writing is a purely personal thing anyways, well it is for me i write for me not for anyone else, but if others enjoy what i produce then thats a big bonus. thanks all for the comments

I read poetry still I would assume people still do it but now and days people prefer everything to be electronically so a lot of people are getting there poetry on copyrighted websites that will publish them and ebooks and especially YouTube I've seen and read a lot of poetry on Youtube but the thing about youtube is you better get it copy righted before you post it on there any way Happy My Lotting! :)

I still read poetry not caring about the authors. I used to love writing poems of my own, but I got tired or felt uninspired that I stopped writing it several years ago. I just regret not keeping those poems that i've jotted down on a piece of paper. I usually did it on a spur of the moment thing.

I do both; I think it's important, as a budding poet, to read the works of the greats so you can get a sense of how they use language and craft their poetry-- and also to simply experience some beautiful art-- and also support, read, and network with your contemporaries. I'm not going to lie; I find most internet poets to be terrible, judging by the standards of "serious" poetry... but there are some amazingly gifted poets who are published in blogs and e-zines, and it's definitely worthwhile when you find them. I'm always thrilled when I read a poem I adore, and then I can actually talk with the author... even get his/her feedback on my own work!
The internet is a great resource for poets, both to reach an audience and to meet others pursuing the craft.
