how can i get my 2 1/2 yr old to sleep all night. he has never slept all night (unlike his sister who is a brilliant sleeper) i have tried everything i can think of.....he is well fed, has a warm bed time drink, stories, regular routine...the list goes on and on. he goes to sleep ok but always wakes at least once in the night. sometimes he settles straight away with a drink and sometimes hes awake for 2 hrs. and he is always up by 5am every morning. i can cope with the 5am start if i havent been up for 2hrs in the night.......any suggestions?

I am going through the same thing with my 20month old son. He's never been a good sleeper. We had on a good routine once and then it all went away and he wouldn't stick to it anymore. now its a battle just to get him to bed. I imagine he will grow out of this, but i also think he may be having nightmares as he wakes up screaming. Anyways, on the days we do get him to bed at a half decent hour its usually and early nap for no more than 2 hours, and lots of play time outside, bath, on occasion we will give him a bed time snack, bed time story, and we use baby einstien videos with the classical music and imagines to calm him down.
Anyways, im sure every parent has their own method, and best of luck to you, and all other parents who are struggling to get their children on a bedtimeroutine
Take care

You have got to be persistant with a child that does not want to sleep. Make sure that he has everything that he needs before he goes to bed. If he does get up during the night you need to take him straight back to bed and walk away. You might have to do this several times, but given enough time, it will get to the point that he will be able to sleep through the night. This is what I did with my son and he is now a perfect sleeper.

I'm a mother of two kids but they're grown up now. From my experience toddlers usually wake up at night for milk. When my kids are still toddlers they usually woke me up twice to drink milk. But as they grow, this habit changes and they began to adjust to the schedule. As a suggesttion, don't let your toddler take too much sleep during the day. This might be one of the reasons why he stay awake at night. Let him play and play to release his stored enegy from his body. This works for my kids and I hope it will work for you too.
