My friend scolds me if I say THANKS...! ???

My friend has a opinion in his mind that if I say THANKS to him in any situation, he will get angry and scold me. He will say there should not be "THANKS" between friends.
But our tongue will automatically spell "THANKS" to anybody ...
Do you believe this? Do you say "THANKS" to a close friend in any situation?

I myself believe telling thanks to a close friend is not necessary, even I say to my friends not say Thanks. But I agree when a friend of mine helps me a lot and when my heart feels it, then I say Thanks and this thanks is quite different than the casual thanks we all do and give.
