I was watching the news with my husband the other night, and we came across a news story that made us both sick to our stomach. There was a women who had a baby that was a couple of months old. While mom was on the computer playing FARMVILLE on facebook, the baby was on a blanket on the floor. Now I am not sure if this is the only child that this girl had, but I hope so. Anyway, while the mom was playing, and getting very involved in the game, the baby started crying. I am sure that all the details were not given, and for a good reason. What was said, is that the mother tried to quiet the baby down, so that she could continue playing Farmville. When the baby continued to cry, the mother got angry at the child. How did she resolve the situation? Did she turn off the game to take care of her baby's needs? No! She proceeded to shake her son until he stopped crying. Unfortunately the child also stopped breathing. This mother actually shook her child to death, all because she was unable to continue playing this game. Now I am not saying that people shouldn't go on facebook anymore, but there is a fine line. I personally can't believe that anyone would get this angry about a game. I have two daughters aged 4 and 5 and I love to play games on facebook when I have the time. However, I would never let said games cause me to loose my temper, neglect my child or anything else. I simply cannot believe that what this person did. I had to post this one and I want to know your thoughts on the subject. Do you think that facebook should be held responsible? Why or why not? Do you think that the child should be giving to the daughters family for care? Why or why not? Do you think that there is a chance that this girl is unbalanced? Should she go to jail? Or do you think she should be given mental health help? Why or why not?

I think you are right about this being posted before. The mother was obviously not equipped mentally or mature enough to have a child. Unfortunately there are no tests gven to decide if someone should be allowed to have a baby.

hello crivas!
facebook or any other online game or website cannot be held responsible for something someone did, just because they happen to be engage in an activity relative to the game or website when they committed something bad.
That woman must be mentally imbalanced, considering what she did to her own kid. No sane or normal person would ever do that, much less to her own child. If she can be proved crazy, she won't go to jail you know. But if she was sane but just have that very dark side in her, well, she should go to jail. While there, she could try to get help, for she badly need help. She's not normal gauging by what she did.

Well this is simply a case of computer games addiction. Whatever you do, you must prepared to face the consequences and if you can't control, there's no way that you can resolve the situation. As for this case, the mother failed to protect her child but instead focused all her energy on the stupid game and exchanged her baby for the time for that game. Not say she must die but she has to go and do a checkup on her games addiction symptoms.

It's not the first time that's happened. Why the mother didn't have common sense and a decent maternal instinct, none of us will ever know. Considering we cannot do anything about it we cannot decide her fate. All we can do is bring these atrocious acts to light and talk about them. Even if this saves one baby we have accomplished our purpose on earth!

I think the facebook needn't to responsible for this matter. This unfortunate things is the mother's mistake.
She need to be checked by doctors to make sure if she is unbalanced, and then follow the US law giving her a penalty.
I think she had some problems in mental, and sShe should be given mental help. god isn't abandon anyone!

It's terrible that something like this happened to that innocent child! However, Facebook is absolutely not at fault. It's the woman's fault because she's the one who killed the child, not Facebook or Farmville. Her mental state should absolutely looked into, and she should be punished accordingly. Someone mentioned taking into account that she might not have wanted the baby and factors similar, but I don't see how that matters. She might have been in a difficult situation, but that does not excuse what this woman did. She took the life of a child, and should be punished for it. Instead of tending to the baby, she shook it to keep it quiet. If she has a mental condition, she needs to be placed in an institution where she can get help and be punished at the same time.

Why in the world would Facebook be at fault for this woman's actions? People have been killing babies to shut them up pretty much forever, for countless reasons. This woman is not the first and she will most certainly not be the last. She could have been doing any number of things, she just happened to have been playing a Facebook game.
Now the issue I have with the situation is that too many people hear a story like this and automatically think "monster". Yes, the woman killed a baby and that is a punishable offense, but there are huge chunks of the story missing that no one ever bothers to ask. Believe it or not, not all women are cut out to be parents and not everyone wants children. How did she get pregnant? Did she even want the child? Did she have any education on childcare? Stories od women killing their children are almost always one of three reasons - they did not want the child/ren in the first place and become fed up, they had a mental illness or disease and weren't fully aware of their actions, or they just plain didn't know any better.

ziyadahinc212 - I'm sorry you are so painfully unaware of the way the real world works. What proof do you have that she knew what she was doing? That she was properly educated or even mentally equipped to actually understand what she was doing?
jadking - It doesn't have anything to do with being "under a hypnotic spell". You'd be surprised the power of societal and even familial pressures surrounding childbearing. There are a lot of people who don't know any better than to do what is expected of them. There are plenty of families that are violently opposed to the idea of giving their progeny into adoption and even more so who simply believe that having a kid somehow magically imparts some instant wisdom and bond required to be a parent, which is completely absurd. To put it simply, some people just plain don't know any better.

I read about that too! I was horrified!! Totally disgusted by how a mother could kill her own flesh and blood. Then I kept on reading, and the mother is in her early 20s, and even though I don't have any kids, I doubt I'll kill my kid just because they are crying!
I don't think that Facebook should be held responsible for the young mother's action because they did not do that to the baby. They did not kill the baby. It's the fault of the mother who put her hands on the baby and killed the life she given birth to.
Yes, I do think the woman should go to jail as only the person who did it should be punished. I think may have a mental problem, but seriously, I don't think that anyone who have mental issues will still kill their own kid.

That is one crazy lady. I would never let a game get in between me or my kids. I don't have any kids but my boyfriend has one and we both play farmville but when his son is over we dont get on the internet we put all our attention to his son. Kids need all the love they can get. I hope this women suffers and gets the punishment that she deserves.

There are always consequences for your actions, my parents taught me that at a very young age. The thought that a game was more important does seem pretty sad in thought. In reality this scenario happens more than is reported.
Should she go to jail? If it was me she would be given the same treatment, but sadly the American government is too weak for that. Help? She doesn't need help, she knew what she was doing if the intent for murder was there or not. As stated above consequences for your actions, you shook the baby too much, you should had never done that in the first place, rot in prison.

I think Facebook should not be held responsible for this.I said this because anything that we've done depends on ourselves. For example, the case of this woman and her attitude towards playing games.Any external disturbances could lead her to do almost anything since she's obsessed with the games. So,I think she must be mentally ill due to her actions on killing her baby.On the contrary, she shook her baby, maybe she didn't have any intentions to kill.Maybe the whole incident was a mere accident. In my opinion, jail is not the way for this kind of people. They just need psychological help.

I can't believe this . Is it sure that the reason for the kill was the game ? .Oh ! unforgettable news . How can parents do this ? Simple because of a game . The mother must be heavily punished for what she has done.
