For those of you who remember and for those who do not, i will start this discussion by mentioning that me and my girlfriend visited Bristol Zoo, second largest in England last summer (in 2009).
With that in mind, we decided to visit Bucharest Zoo on 16th of november this year, to see how it has been, and how much it has improved and what kind of animals are present there.
As a side note i would like to mention that i have been wanting to do this for quite a while but couldn't because of my former job's long exhausting work hours.
So the weather was fairly fine, considering the time of year, and we were able to see most of the animals, with some exceptions - in general the animals that like the weather even hotter.
We were lucky, and most of the feline's were out, even the lion (see the picture attached here) but we couldn't see the 2 lionesses - they were probably sleeping or something.
Overall i was a bit disappointed by the iron fences still present in abundance, but improvements have started - if they continue, they will be on the right track. I also was sorry to hear the gift shop is closed, there were no donation options available, and when we got of the bus at the station called Bucharest Zoo, there was no sign to direct us from there, we had to search it for about 10 minutes -_-.
How about the Zoo's in your country ? are they well attended ? Do they have gift shops open ? Can you donate there in any way ? How about the animals ?

I live in Perth Western Australia and we have a zoo here. It may not be as big as some but it is a nice place. It has been renovated and there are a decent number of animals. Your discussion has reminded me that we have not visited the zoo for a while and it may be the place to take my daughter during the school holidays which are coming up soon. Our zoo has a decent gift shop and café etc. and there is also a beautiful old fashioned merry go round for the children. They have lovely New Year’s Eve parties which ring in the New Year at 10 p.m. for the kids, not to mention the yearly Teddy Bear’s picnic.

Hello Hatley. In the city where I have been working for more than ten years, there is a huge scenic beauty spot with a big zoo area inside for visitors to see. There are varieties of animals, big or small, fierce or gentle. Just in October this year, my family went there for a visit and had a lot of fun there. We stayed there for a whole day as there is so much to see. Take care.

Zoos were usually a very popular destination for a days out when I was younger, although I have not visited one for many years now. There are still many zoos here in England, but there has been a tendency for safari parks or wildlife parks to take precedence nowadays. The major difference from the perspective of a customer is that with a safari park you can drive through the grounds alongside the animals as opposed to simply viewing them in cages. This creates a far better experience since you see the animals close up and roaming freely as they would in their natural habitat.

When I was a kid, I used to go to the zoo in the city center on weekends and on holidays. There were a lot of different kinds of animals, but many years ago the city zoo was moved outside the city, in the countryside. It is a better place for those animals in the country with fresh air and more space. But I have never been there ever since it was moved out of the city. I like animals and like to see them. I am sure I will find some time to pay them a visit in the zoo some day. By the way, in the past we did not have a gift shop for feeding the animals, but we used to give the animals something to eat by ourselves.

It has been a few years since I visited the closest zoo and from what I remember, they are taken care of and there is a way to donate. Perhaps we can make a trip this summer, I love the zoo and all the animals..

The most well known zoo in the New York and New Jersey area is the Bronx zoo. Over there there are countless bird species, as well as birds, lions, tigers and many marine animals. The place itself doesn't have a elegant look, but there is much to see in this wilderness. There are countless roads which lead to domes and pens, and only when you enter a protected building will you see snakes, fish and reptiles like geckos. I feel more improvements are needed to improve the design and appeal of the Zoo's artwork. Animals are the displays, but there needs to be a much better environment for them to live in.
