Here in Philippines, we have a lot of expressions such as the one mentioned above: "The bigger your ear, the longer your life". Many people in my country believe in such things, especially those people who live in the provinces.
Although for me, I don't belive in such expressions. Why? It's pretty simple, from what I have witnessed within my family alone. I have a two uncles who have big ears but they past away at an early age.
I really don't know where people get this kinds of beliefs and expressions. It really doesn't make any sense for me at all.
Although there are some cases wherein such beliefs are the main reason why people grow up disciplined. In most cases, children in the province are more disciplined than children who live in the city, that is because most people who live in provinces are really devoted in such beliefs which in turn makes them afraid of behaving against it.
There in your country do you have such expressions or beliefs which you think doesn't make any sense at all? Why?

We have the same saying in China. My father believes this very much. Influenced by my father, I also belive this because my father has big ears and he is enjoying his longevity in his eighties and he is in good health as ever. lol

maybe there is a belief or expression where i live that doesn't make sense at all but can't recall any at the current moment. i've never heard of such as expression about somones ears helping them live a long life. thats funny to hear though. most people die from accidents so whether someone has big ears or not doesn't really matter. it wouldn't matter anyway, lol.

Superstitions, wives tales, whatever you want to call them, have been around for years. It's bad luck to carry a broom in one door, through the house and out the other door. I think this was dreamed up by house wives who wanted to keep dirt out of the house! Got an itchy nose? You are going to kiss a fool. I have no idea where that came from!
Don't break a mirror or you'll have seven years bad luck. It's endless. Have a great conversation!

Filipinos do have a lot of superstitions and they vary in different provinces and regions. It's cultural I guess and as these places commercialize, the values and beliefs of the people changes too. This is why most of the younger generations now do not believe in these superstitions and expressions like the one you mention are now taken just for fun.
