Seriously, I don't think it's a fad - many people are out of work and, with the dwindling job market, turn to opportunities at home. It's possible to work from home in the sense of a real job and not simply relying on banners and referrals. Transcription and consulting services to name just two. Identify the niche market that you're skilled/qualified to fill and you'll be fine. There are businesses that'd prefer to pay an itemized invoice than to be lumbered with taxes, benefits and additional office space.
