Hi myLotters!
It's not that long until the holidays season is here, and in many places food plays a big part in it. Since there are people from so many different countries and cultures here on myLot, I was wondering what kinds of food are eaten during the holidays in different parts of the world.
Here in Spain a really typical thing to eat are "turrones", which are a kind of nougat. There are many different kind of turrones: chocolate, almonds, egg yolk... and they're all so tasty! Another thing we eat a lot are "polvorones", which are sort of like pastries, and that also come in many different flavours (my favourite ones are the chocolate, almond and cinnamon ones).
In Catalonia, the region where I am from, it's a tradition to eat soup on Christmas day, with a special kind of pasta called "galets". The meal is followed by some kind of meat (at home it's usually roasted chicken), and then come all the sweet and delicious desserts.
So, how about you all? What are the traditional holiday foods in your country?

In our home, we must always have ham and spaghetti and gelatin in holidays. Our Christmas is not complete without those foods. I'm from the Philippines and people here love meat, I love pasta so much and holidays aren't complete without one.

Nice to know that, I just knew that eating soup? is part of your tradition during Christmas. Here in the Philippines, we have a lot of foods served or eaten during Christmas. We used to have ham, lechon and salads. Other places here usually prepare native foods, like suman, bico and others, I'm sure you don't know or eat those Filipino foods but one thing sure is they are delicious.

I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to Filipino foods indeed... but it's nice that you eat traditional foods during the holidays. Lechon sounds delicious, especially since I love pork meat :)
Thanks for your reply and take care!

Yummy yummy in my tummy is all I think about when seeing the awesome food servings during Christmas. When I'm into the Winter, I definitely do see a weight gain, and am trying to counter act the habit of eating too much. Among the fresh varieties of food that I eat for Christmas, are chicken Cutlets, Stuffed Turkey, Fillings, Muffins, and many others. I do feel that a cake would be essential for any holiday as I eat Red Devil cake and Brownie Cakes made from Betty Crocker cake mix. Its rather an enjoyable and satiating meal when deserts are piled onto the main courses.

Yeah, I guess many people get worried about their weight during the holidays, since we tend to eat so much.
Red Devil cake sounds interesting... what is it, exactly?
Take care and thanks for your reply!

Well I'm from the USA and even though I'm American there are many different cultures here, Now in my family we like to eat ALOT.I'm Mexican-American,Italian,Native-American and Irish, yea I know that's quite a mix.So in my family there isn't just one dish but many, that are traditional we have a lot of sweets like empanadas and percinnamon Cookies then we have Insalata Caprese which is an Italian Salad which is only spinach, mozzarella and tomato's and a few extra things basically it's for the colors of the Italian flag but it taste really good and we have albondigas which is one of my favorite, it's a soup with giant meat balls around broth and rice and some other stuff and mmm it's good and Posole which is another soup and roasted sweet potatoes and then there's the traditional ham and turkey and a whole bunch or side dishes...now there ya have it a little bit of everything from each of my culture but you know what my all time favorite thing is?...making home made Tortillas and Tamales in the kitchen with my mom and sneaking a bite of the arroz con leche and picking at everything here and there without my mom noticing lol.... *Happy Holidays!.

My family usually has turkey with all of the traditional add-ons such as stuffing and cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving and we always have a Honeybaked Ham on Christmas. I'm from the United States so we go with the traditional holiday items.

Great discussion!!
UK calling here!
Starting with Christmas Eve, our houses are usually filled with bowls of fresh fruit, bowls of nuts, trays of dates and tins of sweets and chocolates; we leave out mince pies and sherry (or milk) are left out for Santa and carrots for his reindeer. Most children are in bed way before midnight waiting for Santa to visit.
Christmas Day consists of a BIG turkey dinner with all the trimmings, Christmas pudding and brandy sauce and mince pies !!

Hello Cargoleta
I'm from Bulgaria and people here around Christmas and on the Christmas evening eat dishes without meat. They are trying to do as much, as they can. There is no strict number of dishes, 7 or 9 to be on the table. In that number of dishes, we also put salads and everything done without meat, which we can put on the table.
Last year my mom made great experiments with new things, like roasted pepper with white beans inside, done in the oven. Also another dish was leaves (with sour cabbage), but not with mince and rice, but with white means. Other popular dish is leaves with grapevine sheets, with rice and cheese inside.
I remember when people had more money in my country. Around Christmas all friendly families were doing parties where the children will always receive packets with chocolate, chocolate eggs with toy inside, waffles, also fruits like bananas and oranges. That were the amazing Christmas days when you wait to receive your present, and it was usually a nice toy for the kids and chocolates.

That sounds interesting, to have all dishes without meat. I think I ate something similar to what you described, the grapevine leaves with cheese and rice... except the ones I ate didn't have cheese in them.
Thanks for your response and take care! :)
