Can somebody tell me something about it? I need someone to REALLY convince me to read the book. Everybody tells the book was great but they won't tell me what it is all about. I bought myself a copy 3 months ago, and everytime I try to finish it, I couldn't help but sleep after reading few pages. It's sorta' funny, 'cause it's the only book I bought to have put me to sleep everytime I read it. It has boring first parts!
Please rate it from 1 to 5. Thank you!

I'm not sure I can convince you to read it. I barely liked it myself, but it really wasn't my type of book and I was being forced to read it for school. I think the only reason I was able to enjoy it was because my teacher was just giddy gushing about how much she loved the writing style and the main character, Scout. So I grew to like the writing style and by the end of the book I really adored Scout. It's a great American classic so that's one reason to read it. You'll have to find your own motivation after that.

I have read the book and I think it's a very good book. It's about the racial discrimination the whites showed to the Negroes in the south post the civil war. I don't know anything about racism in South America??
The book is interesting because it shows the prevailing situation or status-quo through the eyes of a 5-6 yr old girl. She defines to herself what see sees in her childish but correct blunt way. Its a novel-it doesn't try to teach you anything and it lets you make your own impression.
Its something like Gene Hackman's " Mississippi Burning" movie narrated by a child. I did not find it slow. Harper Lee's style tries to follow the slow life of a southern man in the US in those days. The speed of narration is just apt-in my opinion.

From what I remember it is a good book. Has nothing to do with South America so I am not sure what the first poster is referring to (unless he is getting the book confused). It is however about how people are treated and prejudices in the south (Alabama IIRC) during the great depression.
The story essentially shows that you can not judge people based on what they look like or put guilt on those without any proof. It is a good read though. The children have wild imaginations about "Bo" Radley and it is fascinating to see how people were at the time.
Its hard to tell you more without giving the details of the book.
Here is the wiki article if you want to read the details yourself

You are pretty much trying to read this book on yourself, whereas I had to read it as a homework assignment in 10th grade. The book will seem to be quite slow paced, but you should finish reading it even though. The importance of reading it is high, because lots of colleges and schools have it on their top ten books for students to read. Just try to pace yourself, and find satisfaction in flipping the pages. There won't be much regret if you finish the book by going about it step by step.
