While eating, I prefer to eat with my fingers; I am not accustomed to knives, forks and spoons; though I use spoons for curd, veg curry with much gravy and ice creams.
In hotels too, I use my fingers, it is more comfortable for me.
What about you?
Please respond.

We all have our different ways, i prefer to just eat with a fork, if something needs to be cut up then i will use a knife but would prefer to just use a fork. What about the times where forks, knives and spoons weren't available, before they ever came out, we then ate with our fingers, it isn't dirty. Some people just don't like to use cutlery, but that is there choice, we each are different.

Most of the time, I am more comfortable with using spoon and fork. Sometimes with knife too. When the food is really great, or when I just feel like it, I use spoon, fork, knife and my hands There are times, like when eating crabs and shrimps, I prefer to use my hands. I will do whatever I am comfortable doing in private as well as in public places and I am okay with other people doing the same --as long as they are happy about it.
Cheers!

Hi professor,
From your discussion i feel that you are from India. I am from India too and I havent been tought to eat my food with knife and forks. I use my fingers to eat the food like rest of us Indians, be it home or hotel. Also our food is such that you can not use forks and knife to eat it. I mean how can you eat roti and dal with forks. Yes i use spoon a lot and as you said you eat curry and curd, you need spoon for that and not fork.a

I was brought up to know that using a knife, fork and spoon were good manners particularly when eating out in public. I think if you are at home and you are alone then you should be free to do whatever you want, but out in public people do make judgements on your manners and how you behave.

We're on the same boat, prof. people in my place love to use their hands instead of spoon or fork. It is just not our tradition and culture. Besides, using hands is more hygienic. Fork and spoon have been using by millions people, lol. We just use our hands as our Prophet did. Btw, thanks for your aid last time. My brother recovers now. YOU ROCK PROF!

Well, from what I have seen and learned from many different cultures especially where I work, it is the different customs in each country that makes things they do acceptable and not seem strange to others. I have seen people where I work from like the african countries eating even gravy type foods with their fingers even and I often wonder why? I see people from there pile like one plate with a lot of food and then everyone eat off of there.
For me personally probably because I am from the US, most of the foods I ever eat are with a knife, fork and spoon but it is how each one is brought up for sure.

I grew up using spoons, forks, and knives, and at an early age I taught myself how to use chopsticks too.

That is interesting. It must be a cultural difference. We use forks and knives as well as spoons. I have a friend who often travels to Japan. She has become comfortable using chopsticks. Happy eating to us all!

It depends on what kind of food I eat, I eat with chopsticks mostly with a lot of food like stir fried food. When I have meat steak, I use knife and fork; when I eat finger food like chicken wings, ribs, I use just fingers because it is easier.

Eating with your finger is not bad but If your are eating in some other places or your are attending formal affairs where it calls to use spoon and fork then you should do it. Me too used to eat with my fingers but I only do it at home be at home I am not prohibited to do it. If I am in a party or in a restaurant I normally used spoon and fork. I think we should know when and where to do this.

hi professor I guess in a way that is the way toddlers learn to eat, with their fingers but here in the US they frown at se eing an adult eat his or her food with his or her fingers, specially wet foods that would leave your fingers all sticky. We do eat somethings like fruits and fried c hicken and hot dogs with our fingers also bread and sweet rolls. I do not understand how you could eat liquidy foods with your fingers su rely you use silverware for soups and custards and ice cream.
But what is so marvelous here at mylot is how we all share our own
customs and learn yours and others, and we get a better feeling for
all people. here in the US I felt so isolated as I knew so little
about other cultures so have learned so much in the years I have
been mylotting.

hello again Prof,
I am used to eat with fork and spoon.
My kids also were use to that, and when they tried using their fingers,it messed up everything.
But they tried, and keep trying when they sees me using my fingers (i can eat with my fingers too)
Sometimes i like to eat without spoon and fork,it's like my food is tastier that way (hehehe)
have a great weekend

Our traditional rice and curry will not go with fork and spoon. Here I and my husband love our rice and curry. We eat with fingers. As I care for German children I use fork and spoon when having lunch with them. My children can manage both. But my children's friends (German children) like to taste our traditional curries. When they visit me I let them eat with finger.
