In home we use stainless steel utensils, but till 1962 we used utensils made from brass or gunmetal (kansa); stainless steel was not popular then. In our Hindu worship food is offered to gods and goddesses in brass, pure silver utensils or leave plates only. When there is religious function in my home, we feed people, friends, neighbors. The food is served in leave plates, made from leaves of certain trees, sometimes it is plantain leaves. These are 100% disposable, use and throw. Eating in these has its own satisfaction. In feasts we use paper plates, disposable food grade polymer glasses. Have you ever eaten in paper plates, leave plates? What utensils you use normally? Please share. Professor

Hi Professor, Nice image of leaf plate, It reminds of my childhood when we used to eat in leaf plates for festivals, marriages and other functions at home and at our relatives home. My mother was very particular that we should eat in leaf plates at least on festival days, and I can tell you the food tastes much better when eaten in a leaf plate. I should again follow he same and show it to my 4 year old son. Thank you for the post and the pic, Happy Mylotting Calpro

Very nice topic Sir! In our local talk it is said that Plantain leaves are the golden plates of the poor person (Garibara Sunaa-Thaali), because it is easily available, cheap, clean and healthy to use! Plates of Sal leaves are also popular in rural as well as urban lifestyles in festivals and special occasions like marriage etc. Besides this, paper plates and china-clay plates are also in use in many places on special occasions. In religious feasts, Plantain-leaf plates and Sal leaf plates are more used! Our family use of utensils are of stainless steel and china-clay. Brass utensils are used for worship of Prasad to the deities! Now-a-days, synthetic heat resistance plastic plates are also in use! Thanks for this nice topic and best wishes for a bright 'Kaatika Poornimaa'!!

Dear Mana Yes they are really gold, in the scence gold does not take any stain and is pure, but because of scarcity of leaves they are becoming costly, i paid 50 paise each for thali and 25 paise for gina.. Thank you so much for detailed response Professor. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.

lotus rice - A delicious food in China! Chinese food is the best!
Hi, Professor2010! I have eaten food in lotus leaf many times. In several kinds of food in South China, lotus leaves are appointed containers because its faint scent can improve the taste of these food, and its nutrition will permeate into these food as well. We have lotus rice, steamed pork with lotus, etc. here, all of them are delicious food.

hi professor oh yes we use paper plates on picnics as we can just toss them after using them, I am in the US. I have been to parties where a buffet is set up with all sorts of food and paper plates and paper cups. one party I went to the plates were very flimsy and you had to 'be very careful or you would dump your food onto the floor or worse yet someone else's lap. lol. I have always thought it would be fun to eat off leaves at a picnic but you would have to have large leaves to hold very much food. Usually for every day use we use pottery plates and silverware.

I have eaten in leaf plates a lot many times. As in Hindu tradition, especially during festivals or during some important family functions like weddings the food is served in plantain leaves. It is an experience eating out of these plates.People who are not used to it will find it extremely funny or even difficult to eat out of it, especially when the food is the rice varieties with dishes like sambar, rasam and curd. However I relish eating out of these plates.

Hi there, Prof.:) My parents did not allow us to use breakable utensils when we were kids. They hated it so much when we broke one..:) even when I was growing up I remember my Mum buying focca shells utensils because they are better than plastic but do not break so easily. Well, the spoons and forks are silvers ,though. When I have my own family, I used ceramics and silvers and glasses. But, I love to eat in banana leaves. Here in the Philippines, when we are having picnics or just fun, we would eat in banana leaves using our bare hands, too. The food seems to taste more yummy especially if it is with alamang (similar to caviar) and fried fish, eggplants and steaming hot rice. Just yummy!:)

As far as utensils go in our house, we always use stainless steel utensils regardless of whether or not we have company. When it comes to the plates and cups that we are using, we typically use glass plates for Tom and myself and the kids have some plastic plates that we use because they are unbreakable. Then the glasses that we use are always Tupperware because of the fact that is also something that we aren't able to break. Now, we will use paper plates when we have guests.

Hi Professor2010. Yes, I have tried eating on Banana leaves when me and my family had an out-of-town vacation. It's common on our provinces. The locals usually serve food using Banana leaves as plates and they use their bare hands to eat. When you grow up in the city, it may seem quite messy or unclean when you see it for the first time. But the people clean the leaves first and they prepare clean water and soap near the table for hand washing before eating. It's not really yucky, it's actually a fun experience. It's their traditional way of eating though they know how to use the spoon and fork. When a visitor is uncomfortable eating in this manner, they serve silverwares and plates. I like the experience because it makes me appreciate our culture more and I like how rugged we can be while eating, we don't have to be too conscious with the way we eat unlike in different restaurants. Some of the popular dishes they prepare are grilled fishes which are freshly caught and served with tomatoes with shrimp paste or soy sauce with lime and hot pepper, grilled pork or chicken meat, grilled eggplants, steamed crabs and shrimps, steamed greens, etc. Wow, I'm getting really hungry right now. =)

hello Prof, Here in my country we love to eat using banana leaves. Even if we use plastic, metal or glass plate we still want to put banana leaf on top of those plates before putting the foods. The banana leaf gives a good aroma that enhances our appetite. The usual plates that use here is glass plates. But during occasions, esp with kids birthday party we usually use paper plates to minimize washing dishes. While wedding party's some uses paper plates too when the reception is held at home, esp when guests are in good number. Some restaurant here in our country serves the rice wrapped with banana leaves,it's really smells good. Have a great weekend dear bhai
