The incidence of obesity is spreading like an epidemic. The cases of childhood obesity have been continuously increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world. Parents need to get up and prevent the children from falling prey to obesity.Parents need to become positive role model for their children and help their children abstain from habits that promote obesity. What do you suggest for prevention of childhood obesity?

I would suggest getting kids into sports at a early age. Tossing the ball out in the yard even. Less tv and videos and more outdoor activities. Being a good roll model and being more active will give the kids something positive to go by too. My daughter got my grandson 2% milk for a while by the doctor's recommendation and that helped. Walking short distances to the store or to the playground/parks instead of having parent's taking them in the car. My granddaughter just astounded me when she was younger. She would set around all day waiting for a ride some where instead of walking. When I was her age I walked everywhere.

I personally would put a higher tax on things like fast food so people would be put off of buying them because its a lot more expensive. Not only will this encourgae people to buy more healthier food but also, it should help in reduce global warming because unhealthy food is linked very strongly to food that has travelled all over the world. Thus buying local and healthy food should reduce your caron footprint. Also, currently my country (UK), due to the recession, have been having a few problems with the government spending money and they've cut the highest amount of govrnment spending for decades. So, this should bring more income for the government so, at least they wouldn't have to cut so much so they wouldn't have to resort to raising University Fees... ugghhh....

Your proposition sounds logical. Most of the habits and behavior of children are acquired from their parents. Till the parents remains unconcerned and do not become the role model and exemplary for the children in adopting healthy food habits and lifestyle, imposing any amount of external force to discipline them become futile. The Government's role should more focus on investing more on media publicity and health education to raise public awareness and education about the adverse effects of fast and junk food. Thanks for nicely responding.

Hi narayan2006, This answer maybe to simple, but childhood obesity is the fault of the parents or caregivers, because children are not in charge of their lives. They are not in charge of what they eat or where they eat. If parents were not to busy to cook healthy home cooked meals instead of going out to buffets or fast food drive through window for 800 calories meals in a bag, the children of this country would not have an obesity problem. Once in a while, threats from these establishments couldn't hurt the children, but right now we are killing them literally and with too much kindness by giving in to their every wish. We as parents can stop this madness, but we are too busy so, we will keep right on feed our children these extremely high calorie, lack of nutrition meals. This problem does not have to exist.

You are absolutely right. Parents need to be the best role model for their children, and to abstain from taking too much of processed, junk and fast food of high calorie content. Children closely follow what their parents do and practice. Thanks for responding.

Even at a young age..kids shouldn't be given too much sweets, sodas, junk foods and the like. Drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins. Also, make them eat fruits and vegetables..

You are right narayan, kids these days have little physical activity, they get up do home work given by teacher, go school by bus, in school they sit, come home by bus, watch tv etc, so no exercises of the limbs.. about food they eat chocolates, fast food etc etc So lack of physical activity and fast food leads to obesity.. Thank you so much for timely discussion. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . God bless you. Welcome always.

First let me say,"Its not the kids Fault! The parents either don't care, (because they are obese also) or they are too lazy, or too ignorant, to feed their children properly. Living on fast food is a lazy indolent life style that working parents have now adopted. These obese Children will be the First generation to die before their parents.

Hi narayan, I agree it does seem to be an epidemic.I think that the main reason is lack of exercise and eating too much junk and fast food. Many kids today visit with friends online instead of going outside and even when they get together, they play video games. Parents need to get their children involved in outside activities from an early age and encourage healthy foods. Blessings.

When I was a child we never saw a slice of white bread we didn't eat. But we also never sat for long, in class it was about 45 mins before we had an outside break, this included games like hop scotch, dodge ball, and maybe a little basket ball. We walked to school and home, at home we got snack, usually something sugary and did homework, then it was outside to play, we built forts, played hide and seek, roller skated, rode our bikes and did chores, like paper routes, garden weeding my point here is we did not sit unless compelled to do so. Very few children were over weight. Now I know this was sixty years ago but it's not to late to get your children back into exercise.

Thanks for nicely responding and sharing your past experiences. In to-day's fast life, high calorie fast food has mostly replaced cooked food.Children need to be encouraged for spending more time in outside play and exercise. Have a nice day!!

I think parents should take the majority of responsibility to control their kids' diet. Many obese teenagers are result of ignorant parents, or parents who are too scared to discipline their kids. If kids refuse to eat what is put on the table, they surrender and swap a proper meal with some junk food in case their spoilt boy or girl got starving. No kid will die because they miss one or two meals. They need to be taught what is proper diet and they should have some solid lessons to teach them. If parents don't stand the ground now, they just ruin their kids health in the future. But of course, parents have to know what is proper diet. A kid can hardly avoid getting obese if mum and dad are eating rubbish food at home.

Hi. I personally think that responsible parenthood is still the toughest solution to beat. As a child, they are still under the great influence of the people surrounding them, particularly their parents. It's the parents responsibility to take good care of their children. They are the ones in charge of the house rules especially when it comes to budgeting and planning their everyday meals. Parents should teach and encourage their children to eat healthier foods as early as possible. It doesn't mean though that they won't allow their children to eat a wide variety of foods. They can still let them at times, what's important is to have a proper balance of foods. There are a lot of ways to encourage children to eat a well-balanced diet. For children who doesn't eat vegetables, there are several creative ways to incorporate vegetables in different meals. Parents should allot time to discover and learn these strategies. They can also modify the foods they buy on groceries. Of course parents can't be with their children 24/7 like during school time, etc., but it would help when parents have given their children proper teachings regarding this matter. It would be somehow easy for them to convince their kids if they have established a good relationship with them. This is how important close family ties or relationship is. Children often relate well with their parents and follow them when they understand and know each other well. There are also ways to still gain the proper nutrition of kids who are picky eaters like vitamin supplements, fortified milk and other products. Parents can also plan physical activities or games, it allows family bonding as well as proper exercise to avoid obesity. Healthy living starts at home, it starts with the family. Parents should be role models on living a healthy lifestyle. They have the capabilities or the power to help their children avoid obesity especially in their childhood years. =)

Well as it starts in the home, i think that parents need to ensure that their children and themselves eat a balanced diet. Its no good trying to force vegetables and healthy foods on children if your going to set a bad example by overeating or having snacks inbetween meals yourself that you know pile on the pounds. Its a fact that you can eat fast foods as long as the intake of calories is limited to 1200 per day, so it does not mean you have to stop using places such as mcdonalds, it just needs you to keep control over the intake over a day.

I believe that education is best in the prevention of childhood obesity. Bad eating habits are often acquired at a young age, and so, with education one can prevent it. Like most things, prevention has to start at the top. Parents should try for healthier home-made meals. The most important thing though is exercise and for kids to get moving. Eating healthy goes a long way, but exercising provides that extra calorie burner. Education. Exercise. and Parents. Those are the simple, yet complicated forumals of childhood obesity obliteration.
