Rice, Stoker, Harris or Meyer - who's the best vamp fiction writer?

Growing up I loved reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. I also got addicted to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series (only read up until the 5th Armand book, though) back in high school. Now there's a whole lot of vampire fiction going round and being popularized in movies and TV - Charlaine Harris' Southern Vamp Mysteries (a.k.a. True Blood), Stephenie Meyer's Twilight trilogy, L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries, I heard even Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy is going to be made into a TV series too. I've read some of these, but I think most of the more popular vamp books these days are geared for a younger (young adult, tween) audience. Who's the best vamp ficiton writer for you? And what vamp fiction work do you think is a good read (adult, young adult, romance, etc...)? I'm off to a long trip and I'm looking for a good vamp book to curl up to :-)

I'm probably not the best person to respond to this discussion, but I saw that you didn't have any responses yet so I wanted to send you some love!
I actually kind of hate vampires. I think they've taken over the mythical creature category. For as long as I've browsed the fantasy section there have always been more books that feature vampires over books that feature other mythical creatures. It's kind of annoying to a fan of unicorns, mermaids, and griffins like myself.
I like Twilight, but it's a bit of a mutant love of mine. I'm not quite sure what happened, but I read the series and actually enjoyed it. Not the case with most vampire books though.
Dracula by Bram Stoker is on my to-read list! I'm on a quest to discover all the classics I wasn't forced to read in school but might have actually enjoyed. I'm a big fantasy fan, but there weren't any fantasy books in my school curriculum... so maybe Dracula might hold my interest!

Thanks for the love, friend! :-)
I have my phases...vamp fiction is just one of them. Sometimes it's witches, others hardcore nonfiction, but these days I'm just looking for a dark brooding mysterious book I can sink my teeth (ha!) into.
Turn of the Screw by Henry James is another favorite classic. It's not just simply a ghost story but messes with your headed in a fantastic way too ;-p

Messing with my head... hmm... do I like that idea? Dunno.
I haven't been through too many book phases myself. I focused on Christian Supernatural fiction when I was in middle school, but I moved into the high fantasy fiction genre after that and I haven't moved out yet. (Nor do I plan to anytime soon!) I'll read other books if I'm interested, but the fantasy fiction genre definitely has all my love.

personally i would have to say the best vampire author would be Stoker as he started the whole thing but following him and way ahead of the other authors you mentioned I would have to say that Laurell K Hamiltons, Anita Blake series is by far the best out there and has been writing this series Long before it became popular i believe the series started in the 80's and is defiantly not a teen series. you should defiantly pick up the first book in the series "guilty pleasures" and trust me you will be hooked

Though I read horror&ghost stories,I have read only a few vampire fiction.Based on what I have read so far,.I would say Ann rice is the best closely followed by stoker.
