Why not a MP3 player instead of Ipod?

From my basic understanding, the people I knew bought an Ipod over $100, simply listen to music. So, why not choose a MP3 player, a small one with high capacity to store more mp3 files? It basically work the same, and with a cheaper price. Although the device maybe fancy like Ipod, but it still manageable with all your mp3 files right? You still have earplug to listen to music, and all that. Why not a cheaper version of mp3? I mean that I don't have much money to pay for the iTUNE to shop for those songs, but majority of people still download free mp3 music and stored in their Ipod.

Well, I got my ipod more as a storage unit then a music player. I do have 160gig ipod. When I first hooked it up to itune, one of the option that popped up was that I could set this up as storage unit as well. Right now, I have close to 5,000 songs on it, close to 500 pictures on it. Then few work related large files & few personal files.
