Suppose we founded a new religion. What should it believe?
There has been much discussion of religion here on MyLot. Often there have been remarks as to various positive and negative aspects of different religions. Let's take the positive, reject the negative, and what would our hpothetical new religion believe? For example, DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU, imho, would have to be included. What other beliefs should our hypothetical new religion have? BTW, let call it MyLotian!

Well, you know I thought of this idea once myself as a money-making idea.
I could photoshop a picture of an elephant and make the animal pink.
I would then write out a "holy text", a book of scripture that was divinely inspired by the prophecies directly related to me by the pink elephant.
Every acid-tripper in the world would pay 50 dollars to become a member of the faith and receive a copy of the "Prophecies of the Pink Elephant".
Just think about the possibilities....

LOL, yeah, I do know what you mean.
You have touched on one of my problems with most religions. Many, probably most, and possibly all religions are about the money. It is a sad thing, but there it is for anyone willing to see.
So, how about for MyLotian, we have no paid clergy? That ought to help keep away the money grubbers.

True enough, but judging on the way some discussions here go, itseems as if there would be an almost impossibility of coming to a middle ground that could be accepted by all...in one corner we'sd have the ones who brush their teeth regularly, and they'd disagree with the ones who don't. Then there's the whole issue of hair color to contend with blondes vs. brunettes vs. redheads...not to mention the daily showerer's vs. the non....Oh and what about those who have been assassinated vs. those who haven't been? Really it's starting to sound a lot like Islam now...lol

I just spent a lot of time reading this thread- it is one of the best that I've seen on MyLot. redyellowblackdog, you've done a great job "moderating" and keeping this discussion on track and alive.
I don't really have a lot to add. I just wanted to give you kudos for a great conversation. I'm still exploring my own religious beliefs and spirituality. I've recently joined a non-denominational church, which so far seems to be consistent with my beliefs and values. I hate that a lot of religions are all about money (which is my opinion, right or wrong, about the Catholic Church), or about showy statues and beads, or condone hate and crime in the name of religion. I don't think that there will ever be any unification in the world on the issues of religion; what would be a perfect scenario would be if everyone had respect for others' beliefs, everyone treated others as they would want to be treated, and if there was absolutely no violence or politics associated with the religion.

Yes, this would be nice.
What I'm starting to believe is that there are inherently violent people who gravitate toward religions that do not tolerate other's beliefs. Then these people use God as their excuse to commit their evil while feeling rightous.
BTW, thanks for the kind words.

A part of the MyLotian faith is the expresion," It's my own lil' religion that I follow ". The meaning of this is that each MyLotian has his/her own customized version of the religion that he/she believes. The "God" of your personalized version of the MyLotian Way certainly could have "God" be a woman.

ummmm since we have no indisputable proof of any god at all that would almost be an impossibility to include in our doctrine. But as a member of the Mylotian faith we cannot persecute you for believing so if you wish. We truly cannot persecute anyone for any reason...

i think 'LOVE ALL SERVE ALL' should be the motto.if we can love all and try our maximum to help oneanother then that will be the best thing a religion can do. when you read this you might think its not practical.but give it a try.u can help the needy.help mean it can be financial or giving mental support.even a smile can do magic.do this and u will be able to feel a change in your life

As long as the planet ruled by carrots is not invaded by rabbits, that would be ok.
I see at your profile that you are from the Netherlands. Many of my ancestors are from there. The primary person from whom my family is descended came to the USA from the Netherlands about 100 years ago. I got to meet the man, my great grandfather when I was a very small child.
Another thing that connects me to the Netherlands is that I was raised in a community where a large percentage of the people were decended from the Dutch. Overall, very fine people.
So, while I never have been there, for the most part I think highly of the Netherlands.

Indeed, the similarity is not an accident. How this came to be is that I was answering a post and finishing with Post often. My wife who had just read some of the other posts concerning all of us being paid clergy, said it would sound good to include " and profit" to the "Post often". Instantly, when said out loud, Post often and profit reminds one of Star Trek and is obviously a darn good idea. So, I guess we have to thank my wife for this one.

YES. I have a suggestion. The world is composed of many creatures. of them the human is one. So we can have a religion named 'Humanity'...! Or it may be named as 'Human'. The religion should have the nature as God. It should have no hatred as the first belief. Shold treat all people on the world as equals and love each other with out any discrimination. The head of the religion should be elected by the whole humanity.

These are good ideas, but MyLotians will not have a head of their religion, I am pretty sure. We all think for ourselves and everyone ultimately believes what they want. It is the MyLotian way.
I'm not sure about nature as God, but as MyLotians are pretty much allowed to customize the religion to suit themselves, yep, Nature can be God. Thanks, for helping me to figure that out.
No hatred and treat all people in the world as equals while loving each other with out discrimination is definitely a MyLotian belief. Thank-you for your contribution to our religious beliefs and if you think of more, please post again.

I still go along with reading the old books, but that reading should include an understanding that allows updating the information for modern times. That said, I have to agree that way to much store is put into a misunderstanding of those old books.
Boy, the more I think about it, "To look after each other, in peace and sharing...to love all mankind and wait til our next jouney begins and then we will find out what it is all about.", has got to go into the dogma somewhere. Thanks.

Ok, our doctrine so far:
The newly founded Mylotian Faith is based upon the following key statement "The more you worship, the more you earn..."
As a Mylotian you agree to promte tolerance to all regardless of race, personal beliefs, handicaps, or opinions. However it does not hurt to read and understand the prophecies and teachings of the Almighty Gracious and Wise Pink Elephant, as his teachings are very indicative of those of Mylotia. Belief, however in the PinK Elephant is not mandatory as there is no indisdisputable proof of his existence, or non existence.
Random acts of kindness must be performed daily. Only one per day is necessary, but extra penance will be given for those who perform more.
Random acts of senseless beauty will be rewarded in accordance with the amount of beauty.
Each member of Mylotia has the right to live life as they please provided their random acts of kindness are kept up to date.
No offering is expected or accepted, as each member of Mylotia is already considered paid clergy.
Members of Mylotia will make themselves noticeable to other members by using the following phrase when discussing religion "well i guess its my own lil religion i follow.."
Every small thing you do should be done with great love whenever possible, as this is one of the most important aspects of Mylotia
You promise to look after each other, in peace and sharing...to love all mankind, and wait till our next jouney begins, and then we will find out what it is all about.

I know of a good luck charm that should make people feel safe, a concrete bunker with 3 foot steel reinforced walls. I admitt this may not be so easy to keep on your keyring, but if you towed one behind your car, you would be safe from rear enders. I actually don't think icons or statues or charms should come into it, they are all falsies. After all most charms are only a bit of metal.

Noble gesture, but which bible are refering to??? There is one for each religion it seems!! And being a mere male global doesn't cut it ..haha.. you need to be specific so that a relevant comment can be returned..and personally... none of the conventional bibles cut it for this 1...to many contradictions and behaviour inconsistancies....like... child abuse just for starters committed by supposed holy men!!??
The mylotian way (a harmless suggestion discusion) is only a echo board for some wishful thinking.....

We should also have some such as "judging" is a sin. No one in the mylotian religion should be able to pass judgement on someone else. All of our journeys in life are different, and there are many roads that lead to the same place. So judging is not a option.

I've had a similar discussion elsewhere about this. I'd like to qualify your suggestion.
Many people think "judging" is a sin. I'd say sometimes yes and some times no. My guide line is simply the old JUDGE NOT LEAST YE BE JUDGED. The true meaning of this is that you will be judged by the same standard you impose on others. For example, if some one commits premeditated murder over a $1 debt, I judge that to be a little too harsh. However, that same standard will be applied to me. I do not have a problem with that.
JUDGE NOT LEAST YE BE JUDGED really says to be tolerant except in extreme cases. I really do not think it means to not judge at all. We really do have to judge murderers, rapists, thieves, and etc. But beware, by whatever standard you judge others, it will be applied to you!
Agree? Disagree?

Well..sounds fair as the standards are set by those that judge in the first place!! However this may lead to many "Grey" areas of evaluations!!...similar to todays laws being scrutinised by attorneys and payed big dollars to pick loopholes in the interpretations of the understanding of the law!

Shoreboy,
It was my thought that the posts and comments themselves were their own record. Couldn't they serve to be the reference for the changes in doctrine? I agree about regularily needing a summary of our beliefs, such as they are.
BTW, I have been trying to give you best response for your #11, but the scroll down thing for doing that is not working. It only goes to 10 for some reason. For this reason I'll probably assign you best reponse for an earlier response, but #11 was the one I thought was best.

I guess he means them all...which in all actuality so far all the ideas are very nice...lets see we have a pink elephant who has passd down the words of love, peace, and tolerance. We can't exactly believe, or disbelieve in this pink elephant because we have no indisputable proof that it even exists, or that it handed down it's word. We really can't proclaim anyone a heretic, because we have no recourse for punishment. Maybe I should ask the purple elephant for guidance....
