should I take my computer with me?

United States

I am going out of town the first weekend in December. I will leave on Friday and return on Sunday. Saturday afternoon I am the keynote speaker at a conference! I am seriously thinking about not even taking my computer with me. It's going to be a much needed break from the 24/7 hour care of my son and I'm thinking about taking a complete break, even though the conference will be working... would you leave your computer at home? - remember it is my only source of income!

I say leave your computer at home. If for some reasons that you need to access internet while away, you can go to the business centre of the hotel that you are staying. You can be sure they will have some terminals there which is connected to the internet.

I usually leave my computer at home when I'm going anywhere. I only take it with me when I need to keep working and I'm not going anywhere fun. If you feel like you need a break for awhile... then go ahead and take that break! You deserve it! You can afford to not have it for a few days.

Yeah, I'm thinking if I take it I may feel the need to work some. And right now the break will be very beneficial. I go 24/7 without a break most of the time since i care for my son. I haven't had a night out since July1!

Goodness! That's way too long! All work and no play is not good for your health you know! It's high time for you to have a break!

Yeah, you are probably right. I get out now and then to run a race. but that's only for a couple of hours so I am looking forward to really getting away for the weekend even though I'll technically still be "working"!

Sometimes in life there are many other things that are more important to us than just money...I was in a similar situation like four years ago and i did left my computer at home...

I am leaning toward leaving it at home and taking a real break! I am just afraid something would come up and I would wish I had brought it! Like if I got snowed in or something!

If you have a laptop, if I were you, I would be inclined to take it with me...it will fill up your spare time of a night & any other time where you will have nothing to do & the bonus will be that you won't lose out of any of your potential income.

This sounds like a Murphy's Law-type situation....if you take it, you won't have time to "work" but if you don't take it, there will be more down-time than anticipated...I hope the weekend does work out for you.

yeah, there are pros and cons I suppose. I don't anticipate much "down" time as I have the conference on Saturday and then I think I am also speaking on Sunday now.. so the drive will be about the only down time!

Mostly because I work all the time! I was thinking the break might be nice. Plus I really won't have much time - if any!

I know you said it is your only source of income but it might be nice to just take a little break from it. I say leave it at home and take a break. Then when you get back home you can get back on it and start making you some more money!

Yeah I can double time before and after maybe! I'm getting more direct orders on a writing site right now so that's gonna come in handy next month!!

Is your computer a laptop? As a keynote speaker, I would want to have my computer with me. You never know when you will need it. However, if it is a holiday, I will give my computer a break - at home. lol.

it is a laptop. I may take just in case I have to do some extra notes or something, but plan on not opening it and taking a full well deserved break!!

Hi Macdingolinger, It sounds to me as if you are just ready and needing of a break. I don't earn my living on the computer so I would bring it with me but since for you, it is your work...I say take that break. It will be good for your spirit and help you feel refreshed when you get back home. As another person pointed out, if needed you can access the internet elsewhere.

Ya ok Mcdingolinger. I am not even going to buy into this one. I KNOW you are old enough to remember the days before gadgets. You do know that you can get someone's phone number even if you don't have your cell phone on you...right? That sounds odd to you doesn't it? I see it regularly where young people run into each other and want to exchange phone numbers but can't because they don't have their cell on them...I hand them a piece of paper and pen and they giggle and go "good idea". Take a pen and a note book and you'll be fine...just take a break! You've earned it!

This is all true, however since I am a writer I may need to take it just in case I get that idea for the best seller I've been wanting to write! What if I get the idea and have no computer with me! lol!

I guess you should not. That is very important as you told us that is your only source of earning or income. You can still have a break though, you can just check your mail for some important deals or offers, or you may lose it. I have my mobile with unlimited internet connection now, and i bring this wherever i am, to talk to my B, and to check important deals and mylot of course.

Yeah, maybe so. That way I am still mostly getting a break! I did just get some direct orders on a writing sight and I certainly wouldn't want to miss stuff like that!!

hi macdingolingers I sort of think you need a break, and if you are like me if you take the laptop alon you wll be on it almost constantly and there goes your taking a break that you really need. I know it is hard when you are making money on it but still we must look out for our own health too.I am also one to keep on here as I am trying always to make more money for my internet bill and I am coming up short because of my blasted dermatitis on my leg. If I was not a diabetic I would not let it bother me so much but I do not want to lose a limb because I stayed on my computer too long. So I feel you need a break from life as usual.

I almost always take my laptop with me, however, if you need a break, maybe I would leave it at home. You will only be gone a few days and you probably need to take a few days off. Curl up at the hotel with a good book and leave the computer at home!

WEll, I really won't have too much down time except for when I am driving! I will probably stay with a friend unless I have the money to stay in a hotel, not sure on that one yet. But anyway... may take it JIC but not plan on actually working!

Yeah, I am sort of leanin' toward really taking a big break from it all! I think it will be better than if I try to take it with me. Then I will feel pressure to try to get a lot done too!

As far as I am concerned, I think it will be very good to take your computer if you are a computer fun.But if ou are just working outside and not so long time, I think it may be better for you to just leave your computer at home. I have the experience to go outside for several days, Then I usually just leave my computer at home. Hope you can enjoy it.

Hi mac, Absence makes the heart go fonder. Try going out without the things you used to have and you'll find how good it is to be back home again. Bringing the computer with you may have its benefits but it is more beneficial to be away for a while and come back refreshed.

I think computer is a heavy thing and if you are going for one day, don't take it with you. If you have laptop then take that. I have my laptop but I have source of income too. I feel lucky for you that you can earn your living only through your computer. I wish you best of luck for your conference. Enjoy!!!

Thanks sanjay! I do have a laptop. It will be for most of a weekend.. but I won't have much down time really.. I have the conference on Saturday and I'm speaking on Sunday too I think!

Depending on the situation, I'd decide whether or not to leave my computer at home. If having a computer is an absolute necessity, and one cannot function without it, I would definitely take it with me. But if I need a break from everything and want to relax for a day, and can afford to part from my computer, no harm no foul. Take the break i say!

I am kinda leaning that way I think. The break (total break) would be nice! I think... there have been a lot of pros and cons too though! May take it and then try to figure out why I brought it along! lol!
