Hi guys,
We love our dogs and we treat them as if they are our children. We have such busy lifestyle and havent had a chance to neuter/spay them both. I think our female chihuahua is pregnant! She has been sleeping quite a lot and has increased appetite. Other than that, she has also an increasing size belly and enlarged nipples. Does anyone know how many puppies can a chihuahua/fox terrier have? We will have to find good homes for the puppies. I know it takes 9 months for a dog to have pups and will have to take 8 weeks for the puppy to stay with the mum. I am excited but at the same time scared because I would want the puppies to be healthy and well.

Oh no no no! Your dog is not going to be pregnant for 9 months! Dogs stay pregnant for around 2 months, they are not the same as people. And it is best if the puppies are with their mother for 12 weeks!
You need to take your dog to the vet, and make sure that she is really pregnant. Then you're going to want to keep checking up with the vet (as often as they want) to make sure both mother and puppies stay healthy.
Are you breeding your dog on purpose or was this an accident? This pregnancy may cost you quite a bit of money to keep all the dogs healthy.

Hhahaha my bad! Thanks for noticing my mistake in the discussion. I meant to say 9 weeks . I guess I wasn't thinking while I was typing ahhaha. Anyway, no I wasn't breeding my dog on purpose. My hubby and I usually go out a lot and leave our dogs at home so it was an accident that she got pregnant. Thank you for your advice :). I just hope my dog will have a safe and successful pregnancy because she's a sweet one.

Oh yeah 9 weeks is much more accurate! lol I was like...9 months!?! lol
There are some places that will fix animals for cheap (sometimes free) if you want to avoid another accident! :)
Be sure to share pictures of the babies when they get here! Are both your dogs chihuahua's?

hahahah yeah sorry for the confusion. I just had a lot in mind because my dog is pregnant and my sister just gave birth so I was thinking about her 9 months and my dog's 9 weeks lol. Hahha I will try to remember to post pics up when they do come out :). My female dog is chihuahua mixed with fox terrier, while the male dog is a shih tzu/ poodle mix. I know they will have some good looking puppies. Hhehe! Take care now!

well, first of all, dear, it does not take 9 months for a dog to have puppies...you're thinking of humans. it take about 7 weeks. then they will be able to leave their mother when they are 6 weeks old. and yes, it sounds as if she is pregnant, the enlarged nipples are a sure sign. when my chihuahua mix had her puppies she had 5 and the vet said this was about average. if she's eating well i'm sure the puppies will be healthy. you could put an add out there and sell them for $50 each. even though they are mixed breed. then you could use this money to get the little boy fixed, which costs less than the girl. they will be adorable and easy to find homes for. PLEASE be careful if you decide to give them away for free. it's a horrible thought, but if you give them away for free they may go to someone who will use them to bate fighting dogs. and you will never know. so it is better to sell them, even for $20 or $30. people who use puppies for dispicable reasons don't pay for them. if you take them to a vet to get their puppy shots at least sell them for enough to cover the cost of the shots and break even. don't worry, everything will be fine.

I have heard that it is not good to give away puppies for free because some people who are heartless feed them to bigger dogs and do use them as baits which is way too cruel. I am sure I can find a friend or a relative who will be good adoptive people for the pups.

Hi usaflove08! Oh I think she may be pregnant. My friend had a chihuahua, it gave birth to 3 puppies. I think it's because chihuahuas are small they could only have 3 or 4 puppies. About 2 months or less you'll be able to see those cute puppies. Congratulations!

Aww thank you :)
I can't wait to see how they will turn out. The mother is fox terrier/chihuahua mix and the father is a poodle/shih tzu mix. :P

First of all, Congrats on the babies to come. They are a great joy. I currently have eight dogs, Bella, Honey, and Princess(all female) and five puppies that belong to Honey(three males and two more females). Bella, Honey and the puppies are chihuahua mixes, Princess is the odd ball, white english bulldog and pit bull mix. The two month pregnancy in dogs passes very quickly and before you know it the puppies arrive. Ours puppies are almost three weeks old now. They opened their eyes a few days ago. Most times everything is fine no really big changes are needed for the mom to be while pregnant, of course her appitite will increase and she will sleep more as you said but in my experience vet visits are not a must, unless you notice something abnormal such as spotting or bleeding or anything else that concerns you. In that case, I would stongly recommend going to the vet. Just pay attention...you know your pet best. The labor and delivery normally go with out major problems too. Nature usually takes care of everything. If she is a first time mom you might try just being there during delivery and watch closly to make sure nothing goes wrong. Also just to comfort her. Research information on a dogs labor and delivery so you know what to expect, like how long apart the puppies should come, etc. I'm no expert but I'm sure it's possible for them to have more than six puppies. If there are alot of puppies some may be small. Most times every liter has a runt or two. I usually try to give the smaller ones some alone time feeding so they get that extra boost. I start feeding canned puppy food around four and a half weeks. I usually wait until 8 or 9 weeks to seperate the puppies from the mom, but at six weeks they will be fine. I strongly recommend getting the puppies their shots as soon as they are old enough. The diseases they prevent are horrible and It's a small price to pay for their health. Most vets will give a liter discount on shots. I agree that asking a small price for the puppies helps get the money you have invested back and make sure they go to a loving home where they will be taken care of.
