at night?
My husband, who had been out of town for the weekend, had a return flight home at night. We had actually planned it out as it was cheaper this way. Anyway, although he has flown before, he has never flown at night. Poor guy, he called me when he got to the airport and told me he was feeling nervous about the flight. Had we known this beforehand I never would have booked his flight for such a time. But it was too late to do anything about it, so I tried my best to make it a positive experience for him.
To make matters worse, the taxi was late picking up my husband and my husband almost didn't make his flight. In the end the flight ended up being delayed. So, instead of being nervous about the flight, my husband was now mad that he had to wait. So much so, that he completely forgot all about being nervous about flying at night! LOL
So, what about you? Are you afraid to fly at night? Did you overcome it? And if so, how?
PS Before I forget please don't tell my husband I said anything about this or else he just might kill me! LOL

I haven't flown very much, but the one time I flew at night was awesome! It was winter and there was snow in many places, so the moon and stars shining down made the landscape a beautiful pale whitish-blue. The weather got a little icy as the plane approached Chicago, but I had faith in the pilot and everything was uneventful.
My philosophy when I fly is that whoever is behind the controls has had enough training and experience that he (or she) can handle the plane far better than me, since my experience has been limited to video games, LOL!

I've flown at night a couple of times. But no, it never bothered me. I really never thought about it. One time, we were flying at night and they were de-icing the plane before we took off. So I'm sitting in the plane while they are doing it, and my sister (who was flying with me) is starting to get upset. She's thinking if they have to de-ice, maybe we shouldn't be taking off. But we did take off, and everything was fine.

LOL! My husband didn't think it posed any more danger than day flights. He was just nervous about flying at night, seeing it was his first time.
Happy mylotting!

I never flown at night, but I doubt I'd be afraid to, I think it'd be cool. Except there is a bigger fear now, starts with a "T" ends with an "A" and a "S" is in the middle..

That's ok, but it did have me worried for a minute. Here I am taking college classes and I thought "What did I misspell?"..

Flying at night doesn't bother me at all. The pilots rely mostly on their instruments no matter what the conditions or time of day so I trust them. I like looking down at the lights of the cities and towns. I like flying in the daytime better because I can see the landscape but night is okay and doesn't upset me at all.

I have flown a good number of times in my life and several were at night. I admit the first time I was a bit skeptical but not to the point it bothered me allot.
For me the times that I worry most is during bad weather. Flying at night is not a big deal at all compared to that. The very first time I flew was on my way to Boot camp in the Navy. The flight started while still light but before we landed, for the first time, it was dark. This was coming over the mountains and landing at Los Angeles. Now that was a hoot. Lights for as far as you could see both directions. Coming from a small town in the Mid West that was an experience. :-)
The most concern I had was coming back from Washington DC. We landed for a transfer at St. Louis, MO. All was well until we took off and turned around to head west. For as far as the eye could see there was a huge thunderstorm cloud the reached from the ground to several thousand feet. It was obvious they could not climb fast or high enough to get over it. Soon the captain told us they were going several hundred miles south to fly around it. Well they did and by the time we turned back west it was dark.
Now flying over a thunderstorm with a lot of lightning is a whole new experience let me tell you. Looking down on this was quiet a treat as you could see much more lightening than you could ever see from the ground. All went well with no problems and we arrived only perhaps 20 to 30 min. late.
Another experience that taught me not to fear flying at night was coming into an airport during the day in intense fog. Looking out the window you could see nothing but a white cloud. While you could feel that the plain was landing, you could see nothing. Finally, just seconds before landing, the ground came into view. They had landed on instruments and it worked perfectly.
Now that your husband has flown at night I am sure it will not be of concern in the future. He needs to worry more about what happens at the airport than the flight. LOL.

Nope, it's not a concern at all. In fact, he has another flight coming up and we have purposely planned the return flight to be at night.
Happy holidays!

I am not afraid to fly at night. Actually, I prefer to fly at night when I can, because the flights and airports are usually less crowded at night than they are during the day. Also, it is really cool to fly over the bigger cities at night and see all of the lights of the city below. Flying at night with a full-moon and clear skies is a beautiful site to see, and I have been lucky enough to have a window seat to see this first-hand...

Sounds beautiful! I don't recall ever flying at night. Even so, I don't think I'd mind, because I for one would love to experience being able to see all those lights from the sky.
Happy holidays!

No problem your secret is safe with me...(LOL)! I don’t have a problem flying at night in fact my next flight which I booked for January takes off at midnight! I chose that time because the saving on the fare was considerable. I can appreciate that some people may be anxious about night flying or flying in general. Some people can reduce their anxiety by feeling the fear an doing it anyway and others even need medication so they can handle the nervousness they feel.

everyone has its own fear huh. well i am not that afraid of flying but then i do have a fear of traveling at night. i usually travel by bus and it kinda creeps me and scares me for its dark and the driver might not see the road well or he might fall asleep..lol but i guess it is a different case with airplanes since they do not have to worry of other vehicles up in the air! but good thing you husband was able to fly at night, maybe he had over come it by now!

Yep, that he has. As a matter of fact he has another flight coming up and we set it up so he'll be flying at night again.

Aah. I love flying and I've never been nervous in any flight regardless of what time of day it is.
But mostly i love flying at night time, daytime, sunset, or sunrise. The lights down below are so beautiful at night when you look down just after take off and just before landing. At sunset and sunrise everything around you is such a warm color. It is sooo dreamy.
Flying in daytime is also nice coz the clouds are soooo near you it seems. I imagine I am playing in the clouds.
So ya... I just really love flying.
Anyways, that's a really cute story about your husband. lol.

Thanks!
Ah, the clouds. I remember flying next to clouds when I was little and thinking they looked just like marshmallows. Boy, did I want to grab and eat them! But of course I never did. LOL
Happy holidays!

I am going to call your husband right away.
Anyways, that, after this post.
I have flown at nights, well not exactly boarding at night but landing at night, after leaving in the evening. I don't really find it any more scarier, although flying in itself makes me think. I mean i don't care much if i am flying at night or day, but the first time i hit the air, i was not sure of what to expect. I was scared and excited at the same time.
Okay ..

I don't like flying at all, I'd rather cruise or land than flight
the only time I take a flight is going here from my home land
well at least he wasn't nervous : )

lol =D There's nothing to fear when flying at night. IN fact i think it's safer to fly at night compared to flying in the day.. lol =D At night, there are not much distractions and if there's any, it will surely make the pilots much awake.. haha =D On top of that, not that many people likes night flight unless it's long haul, if not, the plane is almost empty and i have the luxury of sitting whenever i like, and sleep in whatever position i want too.. haha

I am not afraid to fly at night. But it isn't my preference. I like daytime flying better. I can see much more that way. I guess the positive side, your hubby was too angry to be afraid. Which made less effort for you to try and make it a better experience for him. It all worked out

hi sacmom I feel for your husband as I am one who is always lifting my hands up a bit just to be sure the plane is still in the air. lol'I hate flying at night but once I did have to as I had my brand new husband waiting on the other end for his new bride to get back home. I had made a quick trip back to South Dakota to inform my parents that I was now a married woman. my dad was not thrilled so I cut my visit really short., at 32 I did not feel my dad had any right to stop me from marrying whomn I chose.so that mess kept me from being scared and soon I was getting off the plane into the evening heat at the Phoenix arizona airport. sky harbor.so what he needs is something to occupy his mind so much he forgets to be afraid.

I flew an airplane several times on a business trip. And I have to admit, I was really stressed and scared the first time. But with every time the stress got smaller and smaller. Right now, I don't think I stress much before take off. I try to eat a light meal before going on a plane and I try to keep the inflight meals light. I always take something to read with me, so I can "escape" and concentrate on something other than actual flying.

I do get kinda nervous when I get on the plane. I guess its the whole lifting off and landing part of it. It would be like riding on an elevator just a little bit worse for me. I get all nervous and sweaty when the plane is landing or lifting off. It just does weird things with my stomach. It feels all tense and knotted up but once we are in the air or on the ground I will be fine again. It doesn't really matter whether I am taking a plane in the daytime or at night.
