Problem with my laptop.

I have a old laptop and for the last few months the screen has randomly started going really dark so I cannot see the screen. Also there are two lines running down the middle of the screen one green one and one red one. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done for this or if I need to get the screen replaced?

I think you definitely need to replace the whole screen. There is nothing to do with the color setting, or the software. It might the screen display problem or the display board inside of it. So, if you have manufacturer warranty, you can replace the laptop itself.

the green and red lines indicate that the pixels are burned.
If you don't have "burned pixels" guarantee I would suggest to you to buy a new laptop and NOT fix the monitor as it would cost you the same amount of money
