World Cup 2018 in Spain/Portugal? Over my dead body!

I know the title is a bit harsh but it's just the way I feel about it. We shouldn't let Spain and Portugal organize the World Cup 2018 because they're loaded and loaded with subsidy from the European Union. Without it, Spain and Portugal would still be Third World countries. So I see no reason why they should spend our money on something that would make them better without getting anything in return but impudent blabber from their side.

I don't see things like this. Spain deserves to organize a major competition because they are Euro and World champions and maybe the people deserve to see a major competition in their country. As for Portugal, they have organized the Euro Champs in 2004 and they did a great job as far as I remember. But who are we to decide this things? There are many hidden things which happen at FIFA and UEFA which we don't know about, so we only can have an opinion, but our will won't be taken in consideration. Interesting approaching to the subject BTW.

Actually, now that you mention it, I think the fact that Portugal hosted the Euro so recently might prevent them from getting the World Cup. But you never know!

If England don't win it-which seems likely (thanks Lord Triesman, media, BBC). I'd rather it goes to Spain/Portugal than to Russia. They already have most of the stadia in place, Russia don't. There isn't too great a distance between stadia, Russia is too vast a country. There wouldn't any problem getting into Spain/Portugal. You need visas just to get into Russia. The biggest problem of all is that Russia is one of the most crime ridden countries in Europe. To the guy from Russia's bidding team slagging off our crime rate. People in glass houses....

There's no doubt for me it will be Russia. Doing everything they can, not doing everything that is allowed, is a very well known principle to them. If they need to construct a multi-billion highway, that is what they'll do. If it takes bribing people, that is what they'll do. Can't say I blame them for that. At least they don't use OUR money, unlike certain competitive countries...

Usually I agree with you Diamania, but when it comes to this, I actually don't. Spain and Portugal are both awesome football countries, so they definitely would be able to handle such an event, and I think the people there would really love it too. And a lot of people would probably love to travel there to see the games too, so I think it is really a win-win situation.

There's no doubt they'll be able to handle it. But, currently they're the weaklings in the European Union when we take a look at things like financial situation and financial policies, in fact they have been for tens and tens of years now. They just seem to fail to get rid of their enslavement to rescue packages and in the mean while they spend and want to spend it on things like football. Who is going to benefit from that? Not the EU as they will be more and more asked to pump money into Portugal and Spain. We have to draw a line in the sand and move no inch away from it.

It might not be a bad idea afterall. While it does not sound right that the country uses the money from rescue package to prepare themselves for the event. But this will help create jobs for the citizen. Beside, the profits generated from hosting such an event can be rechannel back to the nation's coffer.

Since those packages consists from our money it should benefit the countries the subsidy has been given to in the long term. By investing it in football it shows that they only think in short term periods and expect permission to continue getting financial intravenous therapy. All while I thought that rescue packages where there to quickly fill a financial gap and find a solution for the long run in the meanwhile...
