What would have happened if Maximus didn't die?

What's your end if he survived the injuries?
I think he would get married and be finally the emperor.

The way that government functioned in the Roman Empire dictated that the Senate chooses the next emperor, but often a successor was named. It makes sense that Maximus would have been named emperor even if he didn't necessarily choose to be. He would understand that a power vacuum would be created if he didn't accept the position. But it is also very logical for him to become the emperor as he already had the allegiance of the entire Roman Legion.
