So, is it worth dumping cable?

I've been toying with this idea for some time now - getting rid of cable and using my laptop as a 'set top box' of sorts. I mean, cable can run anywhere from $70 to $100 or more a month. Streaming television shows are free (minus the cost of an internet connection). Between Hulu, all the major networks and many other such websites, there's really no show that you can't watch at some point and generally pretty close to the original air date. Granted, things like sports on TV and live news might be hard to come by but I'm sure there's a way I haven't figured out yet. I'm giving very serious throught to trying this in the next month or two and see how it goes. Worst case I could always sign up again for bale and get back to waht it was. has anyone done this? What's been your experience?

I do not regret dumping my cable. it is saving me money, and since i have fewer channels to chose from, I spend less time on tv. I do seem to spend more on sites like this to kill time, but I am earning in the process so that is a good thing.

wow,the cable is so expensive in your country. In China, we pay only 200-300RMB for our TV cable each year, which is about 50 US dollars a year. But I think maybe your cable have more channels and more options.

Yes I did, leave my satellite service back in February this year. As I was paying almost $100 a month and I could no longer pay that amount. I had been with the company for about 10 years and loved it very much. It was a choice I had too make or not eat every month. I can tell you I miss my TV service to the point that I do not even turn on my set anymore. I do go online and stream all my favorite TV shows and sometimes a day after it airs. But I will tell you something as much as I miss it I will no longer pay for it anymore. As figuratively speaking that is $1200 dollars a year I was giving them. So I feel I made the right decision. But if you cancel think about whether your contract is up as if not you will pay a fee. I had to pay a fee but the fee was like $80 bucks, compared to the $1200 I would have given them I think I did the right choice.

Its worth your effort Tony. Doing this will save you many thousands of dollars over a few years. You can use such money to help pay down a car or home purchase. To me, wasting 80 dollars for Verizon Fios is not a great idea. So, I've decided to stop my cable subscription once my contract ends. There are so many things I could have done with such money, and I don't think cable shows are worth the cost. Tony, setting your laptop as the set box is an extremely great idea. I hope this works out for you in the long run.
