Hey there, I'm interested in writing novels, short stories, poems and the like. The problem is, I can't seem to care much for my characters and sometimes I just get frustrated with myself and stop writing. I've got a quite a few things in the works but I can't seem to finish any. Can you give me tips to become a better writer and finally get something done?

I am trying to bring my characters alive and not sure how to do this by making them talk, move and so on. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Since I am a songwriter/composer,the only field advice I can give you is under the poem. Its pretty simple to start a poem and you don't need a character because you can put yourself into what you wanna write.Let just put some example, your frustrated right now so you can write something about what frustrates you.
My head is full of detached wires
It makes me weak,It makes me leak
When writing a poem, make sure that you do have nice start and end like make a rhythm of it so it will be easier for you.
When starting to write something, dont block out your head, try to think of something you want and something or words that running in your head and immediately write and then after all those words you think is already write down in a piece of paper, thats the time to edit it.
This is a simple advice.I hope it helps.

The best thing to do is to just dive right in and drive to the finish. You're going to get frustrated and lose interest along the way lots of times, but you've got to just keep pushing through. Immerse yourself in your idea. Find things that inspire you to work on your story like favorite books or favorite music and just spend a lot of time thinking about what you want to happen in the story. It's okay if it's bad when it's written... the important thing is that it's written! You can edit something bad, but you cannot edit a blank page.

My advice is to use your experiences in your writing. This can be a great way to help you with your writing.
Don't stop writing and if you have trouble finishing a story put it away for a while then get it out and try to finish it at a later date.
