Hmmn, I cannot paste so I'll just summarize the story...this is not mine
There was a great king who ruled a great kingdom and of course, he thought himself great...then one day an army attacked his kingdom, the king was brave and prepared but the attacking force was too great, they overcame his army and he was forced to flee, he flee for his dear life and came to a dead end, he stood at a top of a rocky valley a thousand times deep, he heard his pursuers coming nearer, the by the light of the sun his ring shone and he saw the message inside, "this too will pass", suddenly the king thought, "yes, this too will pass, only a few days ago ago I was enjoying my kingdom. I was the mightiest of all kings yet today I'm running from my enemies and my luxuries are gone, but this day of danger too will pass."...so the king found courage and peace and was not afraid anymore. He then gathered his forces again and regained his throne, his people rejoiced him, he was a much loved king again and he felt his pride, but the diamond glinted and he remembered to look, "this too will pass". He fell silent and his face changed, from an egoist to utter humbleness"...He continued to role even more greatly and his people loved him much more than they did before...he became greater than great, he became humble
If this too will pass, it's not yours
The defeat was not yours, the victory is not yours
You are but a watcher, everything passes
Whatever state our live are now, say this "this too will pass"
What do you think?

I think it tells of a true nature of life: change. Everything changes and nothing stays the same. People, places, even the shoe you've grown out on wears out cuz of dirt. Best thing is to accept it. That's how the king embraced his life and became bigger than it by becoming humble.

One thing doesn't change though, I think, your true self won't change...you may improve or depreciate, but your true self will stay as you...do you agree?

I don't agree. When you say 'your true self' do you mean you with your principles and values?

It is a very good quote to live by whenever things are bad it is useful to remind ourselves that this will indeed pass as it always does and most importantly we will get through it. My favourite quote is the one on my profile, “The only way out is through” which means that the best way to get out of any situation is by going through it. So if we combine the two we have a very good mantra!

I think this goes to show how quickly a person's life can change. This too will pass is a law of life. When reality strikes us to the ground it is good to realize that 'this too will pass'. It becomes hard to think this way at times but if we keep focused it really does work.

That's such a nice story. I agree, everything will pass. It's like how the saying goes, the only permanent thing in this world is change. It takes great courage and self control to be humble. It's difficult, especially when you worked hard for the things you are currently enjoying.

I'm not very humble, I don't gloat but silently I feel very pleased of myself at my success, that's why the quote really stroked a cord with me...

As I christian I embrace this line of thinking. Christians are taught that the dark times will come but 'joy cometh in the morning'. Just another way to say this too shall pass. Course most Christians just think of it as the new day brings fresh hope and the dark times are but for the moment.

Cool story and nice summary :D
I think it means that no matter the stuation, good or bad, life is ever changing and we've got to enjoy everything. Or maybe not, who knows?
