The incident happened this morning during a 5 on 5 basketball game with friends and family. Rey Decerega, of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute turned to take a shot and caught the President in the lip with his elbow. This resulted in alarge cut requiring 12 stitches.
A video show the president comming out of the gym at Fort McNair where the game was held and returing to the White House, holding a piece of gauze to his lip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlMBwFvBvig&feature=player_embedded
Speedy recovery to you Mr. President.

I heard on the news that he pigged out on Thanksgiving so he had to get some exercise the following day to work off those extra calories. I wonder how many calories he worked off getting stitched?

All I can say is oh well! Things like this happen every single day to just about everybody. Just because he's president it's made national. Maybe he should be running our country and not playing basketball and traveling all over the world. This world is falling apart and fast and nothing is being done about it. So he is going to cry over a 'boo-boo' on his lip.

magrylouyu IMO we should be more concerned about Obama sending U.S. warship to Yellow Sea in show of strength as two Koreas teeter on the brink of all-out war than on a bust lip!

I think it was a family/friendly function, like most of us do on Thanksgiving.
No one cried over his boo-boo, outside of the media, of course.

xfahctor,
I suppose this is really surprising news and I am just glad that the injury was not more severe than a large cut.
Hoping that his injury will not impair him from discharging his office especially with the recent crisis which is yet to recover and the impending issues back in US.
So, I am with you that he will recover soon.
Have a nice day.

I agree, i don't think Biden would do better than Obama at this point so I hope Obama will have a quick recovery.

That's gotta hurt! I'm glad he didn't lose a couple of teeth--basketball can inflict some serious injuries and it's good it wasn't worse. I heard that it was 12 because the doc used thinner sutures that meant more stitches but less of a scar.

Although it appeared to be a complete accident, I see where he was given medical attention as anyone would. I believe it was on the news to show that it certainly was an accident and I suppose they simply did not want to hear later that the President was in some sort of fight or something.
This is why I believe it was publicized, which to me is understandable since the media has a tendency to run with the news.

Over at Huffpo, people are calling him a street baller.
It restores our faith in his backbone.
Obama is awesome. You are new here, so I don't want you to be scared off by the bountiful and ill-informed anti-Obamists.
Welcome to Mylot.

My thoughts are with him during this earth shattering injury . Of course I will not share what my thoughts are. Maybe he will not be appearing on TV until his wound has healed! Must not talk too much or he could break the stitches! .

I actually think it is great. Not that he got hurt but for the fact that they didn't take it easy on him and pamper him. I think too often people in power are surrounded by people who pamper them and are afraid to tell them things like it is and give them a reality check. I recall reading a story about a former president who only had yes men and never read the news papers and thinking how out of touch with reality that is.

Sorry, he had the accident. But no more Presidential speeches for awhile. Might be a good time for him to quit smoking. But I have to ask this, Does anyone else think he looks really old?

hello xfahctor,
basketball being a very physical kind of a game, accidents are bound to happen. and and since he is president, everyone especially the media would surely make a feast over the news.
have a nice day.

Mouth injuries are some of the worst. He'll need to keep it as clean as possible.
When I bit my tongue during a seizure, it got infected and I had to go on antibiotics. It was so swollen.
I am glad he got stitches right away instead of spending all night in an ER.
