What to feed a hedgehog?

I have noticed that there are quite a few hedgehogs around my house. And they seem hungry, so I would want to give them something to eat, but I have no idea what they eat. (All I know is that you are not supposed to give them milk, is that true?)
So does anyone know what to give them? Have you ever fed hedgehogs?

It seems the diet of a captive hedgehog is not straight forward, and many develop fatal liver problems because of having too much fat - for instance, cat food, which is high in fat and low in protien to keep a hedgehog healthy.
This site explains what to feed a hedgehog . . .

Hope it helps, and good luck with the little critter - seems they can be a good pet to have.

Hi we have loads of hedgehogs who visit us for feeding. Their preferred food is the semi moist dog food (ours like Baker's Beef variety!)but I also through in some nuts and meal worms. They've all cuddled down for the winter here now though. time to clean out the hedgehog house out for next year!!

I think hedgehogs like to eat the wet sort of cat or dog food. I don't think that a hedge hog would be able to drink cow's milk. You could perhaps buy a tin of cat or dog food from your local shop and see if the hedge hogs like it. Good luck. My mom has fed hedge hogs before she moved five years ago.
