We woke this morning to snow, it has been a cold - but sunny day, a lovely winter's day in fact - now most of the snow has gone but the canal at the bottom of my garden is frozen over - as you can see from this picture!
The temperatures are going to be -7 tonight and we are expecting more snow!!
Have you got winter too where you are?

Not yet, thankfully! It has been dipping down below freezing the past couple of nights and is expected to do the same for the next two nights but it's in the 40's (Fahrenheit) during the day, so it's not too bad right now. Cold, but not freezing, at least while the sun is up.
But, it has been overcast for quite awhile now with only occasional peaks of sunshine through the clouds. Most leaves are off the trees now and squirrels are scurrying around, making sure they have enough nuts buried for winter.
So, it's already quite dreary, although winter is not officially here. We've had some rain and more is expected sometime next week but it's not cold enough for snow yet, at least not during the day. Luckily, we haven't had any snow yet which makes this year MUCH better than last year! We had a major snowfall early in November last year but that was extraordinary. Normally, we don't get snow until sometime in December. I hope that this year will be closer to normal since last year we got over 8 feet of snow... WAAAAAY too much!!!
Our lake freezes every winter but that happens later, when the temps are rarely getting above freezing. It would be kinda fun to go out on the ice if I was sure it was thick enough not to break under my weight but I wouldn't want to be the first to try it! No, I'd wait for someone else and, if they didn't fall through, I might give it a go.
It sounds to me like it's going to be a colder winter where you are than what we will have. For a change, I'm glad to be here.
Stay warm!!!

The first snow of the season is always nice, so beautiful. I wouldn't mind it snowing often as long as the snow didn't stick around for long and it didn't get too deep. That stuff, even though it looks so light and fluffy, is HEAVY!!! Even using a snowblower on our driveway hurt because it's about 60-70 feet long and is very steep. I think we might just hire someone to dig us out if we get a lot of snow this year.
I think it's cool that you and your husband have birthdays one day apart. My mother and father were like that, March 26 (my father) and March 27 (my mother). I was supposed to be born on March 28 and that would have been awesome but I held out for another 17 days. (My poor mother! LOL)

This is really quite early for us to have this type of weather - last year I know it came on my birthday(20th December) as my husband and I went to a little hotel to celebrate out birthdays(his is the 21st)and we woke up to snow.
This picture is me walking to the car before it got TOO bad!!

We have snow forecast for tonight and right through until mid-week here in north Italy
I love to see it - as long as it stays up in the mountains. I don't like it when it asnows and I have to drive (but that won't be a problem this week as I am off sick for a week )
That looks a lovely place for a crisp walk in that photo!

It certainly is and I am very lucky that my back gate opens up onto the tow path - that picture is about ten yards from my gate!!
It's been a lovely day for wrapping up warm and walking today - but the wind really bit into my nose!!
I spent a few lovely snowy February days in Italy a few years ago on Lake Como, we also took a trip to St Moritz and saw some incredible snow!!

In my city Mumbai,India, there is hardly any winter and its quite warm even till the end of December.Sometimes in Jan, Feb and early March there is a chill and the night temps drop to around 18 degrees Celsius which is quite warm for you guys whereas the day temps vary between 27 to 30, not what you people would call winter temps.Snow? What the dickens is it? For that i would have to go far North, to Kashmir or the mountainous areas of the Himalayas.

We have had a cold spell the past few days. It was down in the 30s (F) which is cold for us down here near Georgia. It did get up to 50 something today, but it is suppose to warm up this week...thank goodness! I have had enough snow when I lived up North and am glad that we rarely see it down here.

We have winter, in as far as it usually goes right on the south coast. A dusting of snow, just enough frost to threaten to kill anything that might be described as half hardy. I will have to start wrapping a few plants I suspect. Do I go buy the proper product or just rip up some old company shirts I wonder?
It does not usually strike hard here- so when it does everything starts to grind to a halt.

No real severe cold, no snow, yet. I expect this next week will be the beginning of winter weather for us. Various in my family were traveling for Thanksgiving and so I am glad that in this part of the US it is clear. Now my daughter had driven down from snow and ice, from a more northern part of the US

Yes, we woke up to snow this morning but it was warmer than it has been for a few days. The snow just brushed off the windscreen and there was no ice under it. Last night I went out for our works meal in a restaurant by a canal and there was a layer of ice over it. I dont have to go into work till Wednesday this week so I'm hoping it'll warm up enough that the roads wont be icy at 6am. (What are the chances?)

Oh yes. Here in my part of Canada, we have about 6 inches of snow and it is here to stay, I'm afraid.

What a beautiful picture though! Sorry that its so cold there. I'm living in Puerto Rico and its in the 80's right now. It suppose to be winter here now but its just gets cool at night now but its all manageable! It was 66 degrees about 4:00am but its comfortable and not anything like what you are experiencing. This is one of the reasons I moved here so I wouldn't have to deal with the cold weather or the snow. I hope you won't have a really bad winter this year and that it all flies by fast for you.

Hiya chem,
Since then I bet it has snowed over thrice over and deeper too. It looks very cold on that Photo. We have had very cold weather and Snow but nothing like you have had over there. West Midlands was very hard hit which they always are when it comes to this kind of Weather. Seems that being in the Middle of the Land you get the worst sides of the Weather from North to South (grin).
Nice Photo and I was reading that more Snow is expected this Weekend over there that date being the 8th of January 2011.
We are in for very cold and blustery Weather too just for a week or two.
