hello mylot members,
does anyone here know how to keep a dog happy?
my dog is female and has been with me for 10 years. yes, she is kinda old and she likes to sleep more often now. the problem is she itches a lot. she has got this very thick fur and so i make sure that there are no ticks and mites. she gets her share of shampooing at least 3 times a week.
i wanted to diagnose and treat the problem myself before i take her to the vet. they are very costly, you know. i was hoping there might be a relatively simple answer and treatment. she seems sad because of the itch and sometimes with her eyes looking at me she is telling me "please scratch my back".
do you know of any way she could lessen her itch?

Shampooing her three times a week could actually contribute to itch. Especially if you're not using the right shampoo. Her thick fur can be another contributer. If she has thick fur, it's possible all these baths gave her a yeast or fungal infection from her skin being damp all the time.
My Mastiff has severe skin issues. After the first flare up, we had to shave him, and he doesn't even have thick fur. Shaving your dog will allow the shampoo to actually reach her skin. Plus you'll really be able to see what's going on. After you've shaved her, wash her with a dog shampoo designed for sensitive skin. Usually it contains oatmeal and oils. And don't do it more than once a week. You can also get dog conditioners for dry skin. Add one tsp of apple cider vinegar to the amount of shampoo you'll be using for that bath. Also add a tablespoon of apple cider to vinegar to her meals.
This is a slow process, if it's an allergy, and you may still need a vet. If it's a fungal or yeast problem, you'll need a vet. If it IS a mite problem, you need to use a different type of wash.

hi thederanged,
i've been told i am overdoing it. that i should lessen giving her too much bath. ok,i think i can solve that.
shave my dog, uhhhh! how is she going to look like after? not yet. i think i will have to resort to other options like the oatmeal and oils.
i hope these first options i mentioned (and thanks to you) would help her. because if not, then i have to bring her to the vet.
i appreciate your response.

I'll admit, she'll not look great shaved. But the oils won't be able to penetrate her thick fur to get to the skin. Shaving her may be something you'll have to resort to.
btw, you don't shave her to her skin. You can leave anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 inch fur length and it would still be beneficial. Actually, shaving right down to the skin causes it's own problems anyway.
Good luck with this issue!

I will tell you my secret. My dog also suffers from itchy skin and was crying from itch. Her skin was already red and she stinks already due to skin allergy. I bought her DOVE SOAP. Yes, read it right. DOVE SOAP. just buy your dog the UNSCENTED one. The GREEN or BLUE box. Make sure its unscented. My dog does not cry anymore. Her tail that USED to be hairless already.. has grown hairs now. I think you should try it. You will see the results really fast as Dove has moisturizers.I ASSURE you your dog will stop itching in no time:) let me know if the dog becomes better:)

no problem! happy to be of help to you :) I use dove soap as well. My other dog, a japanese spitz uses the scented one and he smells so good!! makes his fur so white! not even a doggie soap can make his fur that white. let me know if the soap works for your dog and its improvements on her.

Do not buy anything else anymore. Just use DOVE soap on the dog as mixing anti flee soap or powders will just aggravate the itch. Just try it for 2 months. Do not lessen the dog's bath. Do not make the SAME mistake I did. I used to bathe my dog with sulfur for skin allergies.. It did not work!! I tried dove for 2 months now. Her USED to be BALD tail already have thick hairs now. How much is a dove soap? You can buy it for P40 pesos! Just try it. You will not regret it.

Hi tigeraunt,
Processed food like pedigree contains contains chemical additives and preservatives which will trigger the allergic reaction. Also both in the vegetarian and non vegetarian pedigree for the protein diet ,they will add soya beans meals which is toxic and also allergic. So stop giving the pedigree like diet and replace it with eggs or chicken for the protein.
None of us here is a vet, so we'd never be reckless enough to offer medical advice. And even a qualified vet (worth his salt!) would never be reckless enough to offer an opinion without physical examination and other tests, if required. Self-medication is dangerous for both animals and humans. That is why we would always point to a vet. So, there, that answers your question.
Have a nice time!

hello raghul77ster,
my dog eats my food. i dont buy pedigree although there was one time (very long ago) when she was given a gift pedigree food. well, it went to waste because she never ate it.
yes i understand vets will require to see the dog before they give prescription. it is ok.
i have given her powder treatment (for anti flea) and she has been sleeping soundly. yes true! she snores.
have a nice day.

You can lessen her itch without knowing what causes the itching.
I'd suspect one of these:
- fleas (no ticks, because ticks do not cause itching);
- too frequent baths or a wrong shampoo;
- too much protein in her diet.
The fact that you bath her at least three times a week doesn't eliminate the posibility to have fleas. If you don't use an anti-fleas shampoo, they don't mind the baths at all.
If I were you, I'd start with aplying an anti-fleas product and I'd wait to see the results in three or four days.

dear inu1711 and thederanged,
i will have to change the shampoo and lessen the bathing. i just bought an anti-flea powder for her and i am supposed to apply it after bath when her fur starts drying up.
thank you for your advise.

Too much protein in their diet won't cause itch. Too much starch or grains will, however. Part of the reason my Mastiff needs to be on a raw diet (75% meat) is because the gluten, starch, and grains in commercial food causes him too many problems. And he was on the best commercial food the vet could find. If anything, an all meat diet will improve conditions, not make them worse.

Well, Ann, I hope she will get rid of her itch after you apply the powder. Make sure you apply the proper quantity of powder for her body weight, so she can get rid of those fleas. I don't know what powder you bought, but, as far as I know, powders must be applied again after a number of days.

Dogs are wonderful creatures, close to human beings and very helpful, she is with you for long 10 years, so you can feel each others pulse, she is really telling you to scrath lol.
Well you can try 'neem' leves, it is the best, boil neem leaves in water, bath your dog with that water..
you can also make a paste with neem leaves and apply on her body..
do you have 'neem' herbal soaps there?
try it lol
happy posting, cheers

Maybe the skin is too dry so it's itchy. Just like people, you need to give them lotion or the equivalent of that for dogs. Try some oatmeal bath for her.

It could just be that she needs a little soy oil in her food. I don't know how big she is but older dogs do not digest their food as well as when they were younger. Start with a 1/4 teaspoon and slowly increase this until the itch gets better. Watch her coat closely and if it starts to feel oily back off the oil in her food. Why is she bathed 3 times a week thta in it's self could be causing hte itch. After I have said this , if she was my dog I'd get her to the Vet just because dry skin can be an indication of something more serious.

hi pat,
i bathe her 3x a week because everytime i get back home from work she hugs me and she has to smell good when she does. hehehehe
maybe that is making her skin dry hence i will have to reduce it to once a week starting now.
i will try and give her soy oil little by little. that might help too.
if everything i do after a month does not have any effect, then i will have to go and bring her to the vet.
thanks for the advise. i appreciate it.

The problem could very well be that she is being bathed too often. You see, dogs have natural oils that come out of their skin and if they are bathed too often, it can give them very dry skin. That said, you might want to try to back down on how often you are bathing her and see if that might make a difference in how itchy she seems to be after you have cut down the amount of bathing that she is getting. Good luck to you both.

honestly speaking, i don't have any idea about this problem, i don't have pet dog, here i see many dogs in the street with almost all hair gone and the skin showing, nasty really..
this is about street dogs, but my neighbor has a cute small dog with white furs, now it has same problem, it is said to be due to lice and flea, better take her to a vet,,
Thank you so much for sharing your problem.I think you will get good tips here.
Professor. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

i've done a little research for this a few years ago. as i recall, the shampoo you're using may be responsible for the itching. of of these shampoos are detergent based and could dry her skin. bathe her at least twice a week and use a shampoo that's mild and has this coat conditioning thing. for the ticks, fleas and etc, i'm using a flea collar. not everyone would agree to this but it works for my dogs.
