there is no such thing as a mermaid. It is a product of the imagination and is pure fiction. The mermaid theory came about when ancient sailors used to see seals, who do resemble a human being, when seen from a distance sitting on rocks or on ice floes.with their human like head and tail fin these sailors thought that they were women with half the body of a human and half fish.so the legend of the mermaid began and has been told in countless stories.we all know that seals are mammals and deliver baby seals like whales and dolphins. So rest assured that the mermaid does not exist except in the wild imaginations of story tellers.

Mermaids reproduce the same way a fish reproduce. The mermaid lays eggs in the water. The merman release his sperm in the water. The sperm swims in the water and fertilize the eggs while in the water. So mermaids hatch from eggs like fish do.

Heh. Funny. I guess the problem is to determine if mermaids and mermen are mammals or not... and I tend to think they are, since they're sentient. Plus, mammals are warm-blooded creatures (it would be extremely odd for Ariel and her prince if Ariel had cold blood, don't you think? ) So, after considering all arguments carefully, I don't think they lay eggs, but that they give birth to live mer-babies, like dolphins and whales and other sea-mammals. Or, rather, they would give birth to babies, if they actually existed

Fantasy or Myth? If mermaid do really exist, then they would probably be giving birth as mammals do... like the dolphins & whales... but If ever they are going to give birth on land then they shape shifter back to human to be able to give birth on the natural process. and if reproducing in the way of the human, we all much know that on land, it is done on both feet, while tail could always find a way in sea.

Is there such a thing as mermaid? I think we only read them in folklore stories but they aren't real.

Hi, It is a good question indeed. First of all Mermaid is fictitious character if I am not wrong. Okay now let us start to think how did Mermaid born. If Mermaid is born to fish then the it will give birth as a fish does. Now coming to Fish there are fishes which lay eggs and also fishes which does live bearing and give life to freely swimming young fishes. Again the question comes where did Mermaid come from. If it is from Egg naturally Mermaid to lays eggs. If it is from livebearing naturally it gives birth to live young Mermaids. Hope I did answered your question Cheers Calpro
