The works Christmas "do"... did you?

Did you have (or are you having) a works Christmas "do"? Did you/will you go? Where was/will it be held...on the premises or at a local venue? Who pays for it? If you've already been, how was it? Did you, or anyone else disgrace themselves?
We had ours last Friday at a local carvery. Whilst the starter and dessert were very tasty, the actual carvery part was less than appetising. I suspect some of the veg was left over from lunchtime!! Still, it was nice to get together in a more relaxed atmosphere.

I would go to the lunchtime do, which was usually a local pub/carvery and those were okay.
I went to one evening do when I started working at my old job (I was there for nearly twenty years) and avoided the rest like the plague. The only one I ever went to after that first one was when they didn't have a Christmas do but went for a meal for Chinese New Year instead - and then only because they'd chosen a really good Chinese restaurant that I couldn't afford to go to otherwise.
My direct boss used to pay for me. I think he used to worry when I turned down all the other meals but they really weren't my thing.

We do have a christmas do but I usually avoid them if I can. I work out on the road so rarely speak to most of my work colleges let alone see any of them so it would like be going out with a bunch of strangers. Secondly I work some distance from where the office is based and they always have if local as most of them are. This makes it a mission for me to get both there and back.
The other problem is you always end up taking "shop" which really i am sure you have enough of when you are actually at work.
A long time ago I did make a classic blunder, I tried for sometime to chat up a sexy young lady who was attending. This young lady turned out to be the Managing Directors current girlfriend and I don't think he was particulary amused.

*I tried for sometime to chat up a sexy young lady who was attending. This young lady turned out to be the Managing Directors current girlfriend and I don't think he was particulary amused.* Ooops!
We are a pretty close team so know each other quite well and can say near enough anything without offence. I drove about 8 miles each way so not too far.. Yes, the 'shop talk' is inevitable I suppose but the environment we work in is very much people based so its quite varied.

We have ours after Christmas, the 27th. I work in a bar/club. So we close our bar at 6pm. It is just employees (bartenders) and the House Committee (club run by committee). We have a pot luck, gift exchange and the bar is open for all of us! It is a lot of fun and I wouldnt miss it for anything!

Hi Wizzy. Wow, you had your Christmas party early. It is only the first day of December today!
As I am self employed now so I do not have work parties. In my last job which was from 2003 until 2006, my boss put on some great parties. He was and still is I guess a multi millionaire and he did not mind rewarding his workers. The first year that I was there, we went on a boat cruise to a 'secret' location which ended up being a small resort on a nearby island. We were fed really well, drank ourselves silly, had a swim and all of our children received Christmas presents from 'Santa'! It was a full day event!
The next year we went to a similar resort on the same island, but it was only a night time event, but just as good. Every section of the workshop had an employee of the year award and even separate ones for the apprentices. I won an award this year which was a $100 voucher.
The third year we just had a big party at the workshop with a jumping castle, mechanical surfboard and other rides for the kids. They still got presents too, but it was not as fancy a do as the previous years.

Had 3 nights in Monte Carlo on a 'works do' once (not even MY work)... wined and dined regally - and I cried all the way to the airport on the way there because my youngest had started 'proper school' just a couple of weeks earlier so I didnt want to leave him. Needless to say, he wasnt bothered!
The only thing I get for free in my current job is a dose of norovirus!!

Monte Carlo! Wow!
Hob-nobbing with the rich and famous there I bet!
We had someone who did not work with us come on our trip to Sydney as well. A work mate pulled out at the last minute so the best friend of another worker came along instead!

I think we pretty much lowered the tone of the place... there were a few seasoned drinkers in the party. We went to some VERY nice restaurants with a "gala dinner" on the last evening. They brought side salads and then snatched mine away & replaced it with a "vegetarian" one which looked identical??? Maybe something in the dressing, I dont know. The drinkers were calling out stuff like - how can a f****** side salad NOT be vegetarian?? but all the staff and other guests were way too dignified to react

Hiya wizzy,
Did you go with all your workmates then from before to the Carvery. Seems like you enjoyed it anyway apart from the meat plate thing.
Because in your other discussion you mentioned that the Hospital was doing a four "coarse" meal for all.
Is it that you met up with the workmates you wanted to go with instead of going to the Hospital Do?
Glad you had quite a nice time.
Happy Birthday to your Mum on Monday the 13 was´nt it?
I have no works Do to go to but never mind I can my own private one indulging in the Food that only I want to eat. Don´t know when that will be either.
Have fun with your Mum on Monday. xxx

The 4 'coarse' meal is something that the works restaurant/canteen do for any group that wants it.... we didnt want it so the carvery was booked in a "Toby" place. I think there were about 25 of us and 2 or 3 of them took their partners.
Thanks for your good wishes for my mum. Her birthday's on Thursday so I'll be taking her out and, on Tuesday, I'm sorting a small informal get-together with a few friends.... she doesnt know about that yet. I've got her a big "Birthday Girl" badge and balloons =)

Hey Sue, all the best for 2011 - hope its a good year for you
We had 'our' Christmas Day on 24th, I worked the late shift on 25th (but they let us go in half an hour later than usual) & then went up to my other son's 26th to 29th... just chilled & watched DVDs whilst eating whatever we felt like & opening presents. Got back around 8pm & then got up for work at 5.30 the next morning. Hope all went well for you.

Hiya Wizzy,
Happy New Year and I hope you enjoyed your Christmas Gal. Yes I have read that bit about the Carvery. I am still smiling about the "4 Coarse Meal" I wonder what it did have in it at the end?
I was also just remembering your Mom and Her Birthday Hope you and all your Family had a great time. I know you have to work too but maybe you had some time off?
