The rights of future generations

November 30, 2010 3:48am CST
As our climate is changing and we approach a point of no return, I ask myself if we could be held responsible, by future generations, for our high emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Don´t future generations have basic human rights and shouldn´t there be a right to an intact environment? A lot of damage has been done unknowingly, but now that we are aware of the consequences shouldn´t those responsible be taxed, fined or charged? What seems most unfair to me is the fact that the consequences of our way of life will be suffered by others. The fact is, we are sawing off the branch we´re sitting on, but we´re getting paid for it. Who´s going to be the first to stop?

Welcome to mylot, yes we are solely responsible for the damage we have done that too knowingly, more over we are still playing with nature each moment, we are facing the consequences too, irregular weather, new diseases, global warming to mention a few.. Thank you so much for this post. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . God bless you. Welcome always.

Yes we are responsible for the kind of environment that we will pass on to the next generations. Every abuse we make to nature no matter how small will have a significant effect in the coming decades and centuries. Change must begin within ourselves and be reflected in our everyday lives. Even in our own ways we can conserve and protect the environment.
