Do you still have Dial-Up?

This month we finally got our very first wireless internet connection. Before that, we had dial-up and used our local library's computers for the higher speed internet. The technician who installed our wireless was very surprised to hear that we still had dial-up. Is there anyone else out there who still has dial-up? If not, when did you switch to a faster connection?

Nope, my family switched over to Broadband 5-6 years ago and then to wireless just this year. I don't think I know anyone who has dial-up anymore. Now-a-days you can get Broadband and wireless much cheaper than you used to be able to though so you don't really save much money by getting dial-up. Also most phone, cable and internet services come together in a package now so you buy them all together and thus save money.

Thanks for responding :) Is wireless better than broadband?

Yeah, I noticed the difference in connection speed, but I really like the freedom to be able to move around without wires! :)

Yes, for for the most part wireless is better. It's more convenient since you don't need to physically plug your computer into the router/modem and so multiple people can use it at once. The speed isn't different from Broadband really, it just depends on how much you pay for it (obviously). The only problem I have with it is sometimes the connection speed can become very inconsistent if you're not close enough to the source.

we never used dial-up internet connection at home neither do we connect using broadband line connection. we haven't used dial-up telephones for many years now since the arrival of mobile phones. we use portable high-speed usb modems (upto 3.1 mbps). that's much convenient for us who travel a lot and don't stay put at a particular place. well, at least for me. i can take it anywhere in the country with my laptop and browse the web. my brother too uses the same usb modem. my brother uses post-paid service while i use pre-paid service. it makes sense too as he's already well settled at home with his family so post-paid suits him. but pre-paid is more convenient for me for the same reason as stated above - travelling. and also it allows me to use only according to my needs and i don't have to worry about the monthly rentals associated with post-paid service. before that i've also used other few types of connections like non high-speed usb modem (1x), through mobile handset used as modem (gprs), etc. i also browse the web from mobile handsets extensively when i'm not doing it in my laptop. i've tried using most of the possible types of connections - dial-up (though not at home), gprs, wi-fi, usb modems (both broadband and low-speed), broadband land-line connections at cybercafes and other places, etc.

Portable high-speed USB modems sound wonderful! Wireless is great, but you can only use it at home. It would be great to be able to get an internet connection from anywhere in the world. Are the portable usb modems more expensive than wireless?

i don't know which one is more expensive - the portable broadband usb modem or the wireless connection (wi-fi) which is set up at home (or office). i think it also depends on the type used because there are various types for either of them from different companies as well as according to needs. besides, i've never tried setting up a wireless connection at home so i don't have any idea how much the wi-fi routers cost. the wi-fi that i've used are from other places which i encountered, most of them are secured though and i cannot access them without password. i got a few which were secured and accessed them a few times. some were really fast. yeah but that depends on the speed of their internet connection. routers are just meant to provide the wireless services without the need for cables.

i am happy to say i finally said goodbye to dial-up. i could not watch videos, and downloads took hours. it is worth the extra money and is Much faster... i have dsl now and is much faster... one of the other problems with dial-up was i could not use my landline. i could not receive calls either when i was online with dial-up. goodbye dial-up!

Oh my goodness! With dialup we couldn't receive call on our landline, either! People started complaining when they could never get through on our home phone! I'm so glad we have wireless now.

No I don't use dial up, my family turned to broadband about 7 years ago. When we changed to broadband, wireless was not around, it was connected by an ethernet cable. It was about 4 years ago that we switched to wireless broadband and that is what I have at the moment.

No, I don't have dial-up. I haven't had dial-up since I was a kid. I find that it's so much easier without dial up.

It's been many years since we used dial-up at our house. It's been almost 10 years at least. I'm also glad that we are not using it at the moment since there is no way for that to be possible for us. We have four computers at home and they are constantly being used by various people so there's no way that dial-up can work for all of us. I don't even think it'll load with everyone trying to use it at the same time. We have cable at the moment and it's still kind of laggy when all of us goes on our computers or laptops (especially when my brother is playing his World of Warcraft game).

Yeah, dialup doesn't work well with multiple people online at the same time. And it would be impossible to play World of Warcraft with a dialup connection! :)

I used to have dial up connection initially. But since last three years I have shifted to CDMA wireless Modem. I used the dial up connection fr many important works . The speed used to be too slow and the down loading used to be a big head ache then. But now with the CDMA connection I am very happy. But I am awaiting for Broad band connection which I may get soon as I am residing in an area which is bit far away from the township. Thanks !

I agree... I'm very happy with my wireless connection! Dialup is indeed a huge headache, especially if you want to download videos! Broadband sounds even better! :)

I have switched to broadband more than 10 years ago. It is much more stable than the dialup. But I still remember the days on dial up and ringtone.
