Liver Cirrhosis: causes and treatment?

Have you heard Liver Cirrhosis? Is this like a cancer in the liver? I have a friend that her dad had this kind of illness, the Doctors told them that their would only last for 3 months. Then after 3 months her pass away. How serious is this Illness? Is there a cure? How to prevent this? What are the causes? Can anyone tell me about this?
