For be it for me to judge someone who is a proffesional because I am a long way from it. I love sports and I guess you could say that I am a proffesional WATCHER! When I read about the contract extension that the Colorado Rockies gave to Troy Tulowitzki it really got me to thinking about the question I askesd. A contract extension that pays him 160 million over 10 years WOW! At 26 years of age that is a lot of money. Another question that I ask myself is how can the Rockies organization afford to pay that kind of money. Especially every time you see a baseball game on tv the stands are half empty. Have you got yourself a new baseball cap lately. Now you know how they can afford it MLB merchandise is outrageous but liscensed products are they way to go. If he can get 16 million a year to play what he loves to do more power to him.

Professional athletes really do get paid a lot especially when you factor in the fact that they are playing while working. It is hard work no doubt but the salaries? WOW if I was paid that much I'd work my butt off!
With respect to how they get paid, I believe it through the profit sharing structure of MLB. The Yankees are the heart and soul of the league and the reason why teams in smaller towns don't complain about NY getting all the players is because they share in the profit of the NY. They would be losing more money by winning paying athletes Millions while they could earn by being mediocre through profit sharing.

I have to totally agree with you you can see the evidence. One thing that you notice is the merchandise these teams sell. This could be one reason why the Yankees are willing to negotiate with Jeter because of his marketability. Thanks for responding!
