my girlfriend's puppy, Maximus, is sick.
He has a blood parasite and he's really thin.
I spent last night cradling him cause he was really weak.
what do you do when your dog is sick?
how do you offer relief to the dog?

The most important thing to do for your dog is to stay calm and assertive, be the stable packleader to your dog. Don't "baby" him or treat him different then you normally do. I try to when my dog(s) is/are sick (I have 3 dogs). Of course you feel sick yourself and really concerned when a dog (or any other animal) is sick, but never show this to your dog!
Meanwhile take care of his needs, like does he need rest, medication, diet, visit to the vet, massage, etc.
In nature being sick means "weak energy", and animals don't like to be sick because in nature that means danger. That is still in the instincts of your dog! So what he needs is a calm packleader who fullfills his needs of course, but doesn't consider him a weak being.
Act in the moment, follow your intuition! And don't show your human emotions of sadness, concern, fear, etc. as a dog won't understand this and it makes him uncertain and unstable. Express your emotions but not around the dog, make sure he doesn't see, hear, etc. it. :)

Dogs need comfort just like ppl do. That is why they come to us if they are afraid, hurt or sick. To not give your dog comfort can stress him out and make him worse. And it is possible to be the strong pack leader while cuddling your dog. I cuddle my dogs all the time, but there's no mistake that I'm in charge. Chances are, the reason they're cuddling in the first place is that they take comfort from being close to their pack leader. The reason dogs are pack animals, and not solitary creatures, is because they crave the comfort and closeness. And it IS possible to comfort your sick dog without exuding an air of worry and fear. And that is the only important thing. Relaying the sense, to your dog, that everything is going to be ok while you comfort, cuddle and soothe their fears.
Being ill is a terrifying thing to your dog, as in the wild being ill means being ejected from the pack... a dog's worst fear. Not soothing those fears will be more terrifying than cuddling them.

When my dog is sick, I usually take her to the vet to see what is wrong with her. I spend more time trying to comfort her also. It is hard when a pet is going through so much pain and you are not sure what to do. I would take your dog to the vet to see what can be done.

You have to take your dog to the vet. If you don't those parasites could get worse.

hi chip wow poor Maximus I hope you have had Max to a veterinarian to ' combat blood parasite and have been given medication for the disease.
I have not had a pet for years but when my last dog was ill, I think I acted a lot like I would if a child was ill. I gave him his medication and talked with Him, I fed him his favorite foods and was sure to offer
him enough water too. I felt that some things were almost the same with a toddler or a little dog like Max. My dog's name was Swap because we bought him at a swap meet when he was just a puppy.it broke my heart to have to find him a good home as we had sold our house and were moving to an apartment. But he did take to his new owners and slept on the foot of the little daughter's bed. I felt a relief to know he had a great home.
I only wished that our apartment complex had had a small dog rule like a few apartment complexes do. However those apartments are usually way above our heads in rents.

I'm sory for your girlfriend's puppy. I hope Maximus will get well soon and he will recover and be a normal dog again.
The first thing I do when my dog is sick I go to the vet. Then I make sure I follow the treatment the vet prescribed and the dog eats whatever the vet recommended. I try to confort her as much as I can, by showing her that she is not excluded of the family because she's ill and she can't follow us around.

I really hate it when my dog gets sick. It can become a stressful time for everyone since we're all fretting and worrying about whichever one gets sick (we have two chihuahuas). But I think my mom is the most stable one and she keeps everything in order. My dog has been sick twice since we've had her and both times we've done everything we could to make her comfortable. We'd take her out back when she needs to relieve herself, feed her and give her medicine in a timely manner and things like that. And someone would always check up on her during the night to make sure that everything is okay. We did kind of baby her a bit though.

Well, I try my best not to get my dog too stressed, and I make his feel good by giving him a little extra care. I even feed him myself to make sure he eats the right amount of food. :)
