This too shall pass but right now I'm grumpy...

Why do I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach? Well, the orthodontist just told me this morning that Dearra needs to have four more teeth pulled.
Last June she had four baby teeth pulled, because the adult teeth were getting ready to sprout, and there was no room for them. She was miserable. This time it's adult teeth.
He showed me her x-rays, and her front teeth are too far forward, her back teeth are pushing against the jawbone, and there isn't room for all of the four new teeth to come in even so. There is no hope in hell for wisdom teeth, that is for sure.
Anyway, I'm grumpy because I know she's going to be really miserable, and probably it will be during the last week of her Christmas vacation if I can arrange it, because otherwise she will probably miss a week of school.
So this too shall pass, I'm sure, but right now I'm not feeling so great...
Freakin' closet empath indeed!

So she's getting adult teeth pulled? Will she need dentures or are these teeth ones she can live without? I need to get some teeth pulled too.. waiting for tax season so I can use my returns to buy new dentures. I currently have a partial plate, but I'm thinking it's time to bite the bullet and remove all the teeth and get full dentures... and I'm only 30.. so sad!

My brother had the same problem. Actually I think he had covered the kids, but not himself. He ended up having most of his teeth pulled. He was in his 40's though.

Yep, adult teeth. She can do without them, she just doesn't have room in her mouth for them.
Geesh, all of them? Some people just have rotten luck with their teeth...

Poor kid.. one of my twins needed a couple of baby teeth pulled a couple years ago, he was only 6 at the time. I felt so awful for him because I know how bad it hurts.
My big problem is I have a cruddy dental plan. When I got the set of partials most of my other teeth were okay, but needed some fillings. But each filling would have cost me an arm and a leg out of pocket, and they wanted to do many at a time. Well I don't have that kind of money, and there's always something more important I need to do like buy clothes for the kids or something.. so it kept getting put off and the cavities kept getting worse. Now I'm in constant pain from a couple of back teeth and it's to the point where bits of the tooth break off everytime I eat something.. and it doesn't even have to be anything hard or crunchy. I broke a tooth last week on a tuna sandwich!

hi dawnald oh my I remember my wisdom teeth and my jaw b eing so
crowded too.but I had it done in my early twenties and it waspretty painful but now they have new techniques so it might be a lot easier for her. the one time I had real trouble with a tooth being pulled the dentist forgot to warn me not to dislodge the blood clot in theemptyh tooth. I washed it out and was in pain like I have never had b efore even child birth was not that painful. My hubby took me back and he packed it with some salve that stopped the pain at once.I was told it was a bare nerve but he did get the pain stopped. this will pass and also modern dentists have some new techniques to make teeth pulling less
painful. good luck and God bless.

Ah, I would know what Dearra is/will be going through. I've had many teeth pulled out as a kid - ouch! I also had to have surgery to remove 4 "extra" teeth that didn't even surface yet (I think the canines) because they said my mouth did not have room for them. (My mom's side has a bunch of extra teeth, so that's probably where I got it from). They knocked me out so good that I didn't wake up til well after I got home. I don't remember how long it took me to recover, but I ended up with a bruise beard - and even the teachers were questioning if I was being abused at home!!!!!! And yes, my wisdom teeth all had to be removed way later on (interestingly, I only had 3 - and one of them was impacting the bottom row). But that wasn't so bad - I was able to go to Johnny Rockets the next day to eat a burger (by fork and knife). Oh - I feel for Dearra . . . but maybe because she has previous experience, it won't be so bad this time.

I had to have surgery to remove a baby tooth and pull down an impacted adult tooth, and then the wisdom teeth had to be removed later. Not fun at all. I hope this time is better than the last time with her...

Four permanent teeth That's a lot. Is her Jaw not growing as it should? One of my granddaughters has given her mother a large orthodontist bill. One of her baby teeth didn't come out when it should have. The permanent tooth came in through the roof of her mouth. The dentist pulled the baby tooth and tied a wire around the permanent tooth. Don't know what he tied the other end of the wire to, but he tightened it during each visit until the tooth was guided to the space where the baby tooth was pulled out. They can do wonders now. Everyone can have perfect teeth - if the parents can come up with the money. Our daughter managed to pay her daughter's orthodontist bill but neglected her own teeth. I 'm afraid that s he will end up wearing dentures.

What you are describing is exactly what happened to me. But in her case, her mouth just isn't big enough. the back teeth are pushing against the back of her mouth (jawbone) and her front teeth are too far forward, and there's not enough room to get the new teeth in AND fix all that.

I have gone through 3 people in this house with braces.
My husband and my 2 boys.
They all have had to have teeth taken out.
I'm sure she will do fine....I don't think taking teeth out today is such a big deal as it was in my time.
There is no swelling etc anymore.
...and yes, this too will pass....but when it is happening to you or your family, it is a big deal to you.
Good luck to your daughter and have a Merry Christmas.

I'm sure she'll be fine, but she was so miserable when she had baby teeth pulled, that I don't doubt she will be miserable for a few days here too!

I had braces as a kid too, so I understand how all that goes. I also had to have 4 adult teeth pulled...I believe my eye teeth. I hated it at the time, but when I see all the people that have problems with their wisdom teeth coming in and all the pain, I was grateful to have my teeth pulled when I did. All of my wisdom teeth came in with absolutely no problems. My husband had to have his all pulled (his wisdom teeth) because they were all impacted and he had no room left in his mouth. I guess it is better for her to be a bit miserable now than later in her 30s or 40s and in a lot of pain then. On the other hand, as a mom myself, we hate to see our children miserable and in pain, but we have to do what is best for our children in the long run...crappy as it may be at times. :-)

That sounds like something that we went through with Kathryn two years ago. We took her to the dentist because she has a bad baby tooth and needed to have it filled. They instead wanted to pull all of her baby teeth so that there would be room for her adult teeth. The poor child was only six years old at the time. We opted to wait for a while because we didn't want her to have to go through years of her life without teeth in her head.

The same thing happened to me when I was 16. But mine was a little worse, my top adult teeth weren't coming down because my baby teeth were too tough, there wasn't enough room in my mouth, etc. I ended up in the hospital for three days. They removed baby and wisdom teeth, as well as adult "teeth" (really just bone), but left one baby tooth (I lost it when I turned 40, then I needed a bridge). It required cutting the upper part of my mouth back. When my sister saw me in the hospital, she started screaming. I had black stitches hanging from all of my upper teeth, a swollen face and two black eyes. I say it's better Dearra get it done during the Christmas break...mine was during the summer break and very few people got to see me while I recovered. Thank goodness! I looked like a mess, but probably because of all the pain killers, I didn't really feel that bad. I had some friends sneak pizza up the back stairwell of the hospital...

Wow, not a good time at all for any of you really is it. It is not nice at all to have teeth removed, i hate it. It seems that she really is having a bad time with her teeth, why can't things just be simple and straight forward? Well, i guess life likes to throw problems our way. I think you can understand that she would be miserable, im sure you and i would be if we had to go through what she has. Of course she won't always be miserable that will pass, eventually, but im sure you understand if she is to be miserable. I think it would be best to get this done while she is not at school. Not really going o be a good christmas or holiday from school for her is it? Hope all goes well for her and hope that you all can enjoy christmas.

Yes, you are right that this too will pass as everything else will. Nothing is permanent, but when we are in the midst of things that panic us, it can feel as if it will be forever.
As a child I had the same problem. I had two rows of teeth that were competing for space and twisting around in my mouth. I can't remember how long it lasted but I was back and forth to the dentist having all the extra pulled out. First of all the baby teeth, but then back again for the adult one. It seemed never ending to me as I hated the dentist and often had to listen to kids going in before crying and sometimes screaming in the chair. I would get all tensed up and scared about it, until one day I had this thought that I had no say in the matter and just gave up fighting it. I was OK then. I am sure that my mother hated putting me through it, but as she kept saying, the alternative was to grow up with rows of ugly, crooked teeth showing every time I smiled. _Derek

I can so relate to how you are feeling Dawnald. With my daughter...it is her Migraines. I have taken her to the doctors countless times and she is seeing a nurologist in hopes of getting them under control. She is miserable and hard to live with. She misses school and me? I'm just tired, frustrated etc. This morning she missed yet another day of school. Her pain is real...of that I have no doubt. Still her education is important. She's a smart kid and while the school is being very kind about the situation...I'm just down about it. I am worried about her health..frustrated with it and worried about her education. I'm just over the top stressed today. I don't even want to go on with this rant because I'll just get myself all worked up again. You are right. It will pass. We just need to breath deep and take it as it comes. Everything changes always. It does. Hang in there, Dawn.

Kind of sounds like what I was going through with Dearra last year, except it wasn't migraines, it was anxiety, which was causing her stomach problems (pre-ulcer). She missed a lot of school too before counseling and meds for the stomach helped her. Good luck with this. Migraines are nasty. - Dawn

Hey dawny~ I'm sorry that Dearra is going to have to deal with
this teeth pulling. I'm guessing that it probably will be worse
on you and everyone else having to deal with her being miserable.
I don't envy you or anyone in your house. Maybe they can give
her enough stuff to keep her knocked out for the week! Only
kidding (no such luck-she's too young)-Well, maybe they can
give it to you instead? I'll be praying for you all~

My daughter is undergoing orthodontic treatment and, although she only stated last week I know she is going to feel uncomfortable and sore with the new plate and my heart goes out to her because I remember how miserable I felt when I had the same treatment! With our children we seem to be reliving our old life as children along with all the emotions that go along with it. I guess we just have to hang in there with them and endure...
