I was watching the local news last night and I got really disturbed when a blood donor admits that he passed on HIV to other persons because he was not aware that he had HIV when he donated blood. He meant well when he donated blood but it appears that life has its own way of making us realize that we are all interrelated. According to the news the blood donor was an overseas worker in an middle east and since their salary were not given regularly at that time, he and his companions started the habit of donating blood to augment their finances. They were paid for each bag of blood that they donated. Unfortunately, he was gang raped by some Arab men but he never reported the incident for fear of his life and security. Without his knowing he got infected with HIV and when he donated blood, the blood recipient also got infected. He was imprisoned for some time in that country. I guess the patient who was infected was a countryman of those who gang raped him. What a sad story. I pity the patient and the blood donor. The only thing for sure is that one of those who gang raped the blood donor also have HIV. I hope this kind of incident will not happen again. For those who intend to donate blood I hope they will always have themselves check for any illness/diseases before donating blood even if they are regular blood donors.I also hope Blood Banks and hospitals will always ensure that the blood donor is fit to donate blood. Recipients of donated blood should also exercise extra precaution in making sure they got healthy uncontaminated blood. If you know any of these persons, please share this. Have a good day and happy mylotting!

Donated blood in the U.S. is tested for HIV and a number of other diseases before it's cleared for use by others. For this reason it's not necessary to have yourself tested before every blood donation.
