I am rarely entirely serious in my discussions but this one is an exception. Are you like me in the photo below? Fat and over 40? In my case over 50. When did you last have your blood pressure checked by a medical professional? One in four men in western societies have high blood pressure and half of them don't realise it. Discovering that it's too high is frankly scary - but if you know then you can do something about it before you have a stroke or heart attack, both of which may be fatal. Don't be like me and wait until you end up at the hospital to have your checked. Do it soon. Please.

I am glad to read here that you have been exercising and losing some weight my friend. It is great that you acknowledge this issue and are doing something proactive about it now.
I was probably heading towards having a tummy like that too, when in my early to mid thirties I decided to do something about it. I think I have spoken to you before about how I lost about 20 kilograms. Mainly for me, it was through vastly cutting back on my drinking, cutting out all meat and dairy and most grain products from my diet. Once I did this I started having more energy to put towards exercise, so I kept losing weight. People that I knew who were big unhealthy people said I was getting too thin and were worried by the rapid weight loss I was experiencing, but in reality, I was getting back to my ideal healthy weight.
When we put too many toxins into our bodies, such as highly processed food, our bodies store fluid around our cells to protect them. Just like how we swell up with fluid when we injure ourselves, so we gain weight and size. When we detoxify our bodies, this fluid goes first causing rapid and big weight loss. People then get excited about how much weight they are losing, but when the fluid is gone, their weight steadies and then they start to wonder what they are doing wrong. Sometimes then, they blame the diet and lose faith in what they are doing.
You may already know this, but just in case you do not, it may help you to know.

I was very sporty in my late teens and early twenties Bill and kind of rested on those laurels for the next 30 years! Now I am working to reduce my weight and get some exercise back in. I did know about that early weight loss - I have a number of friends who are doctors - they have an almost unhealthy interest in how I'm doing and let me have all the possible problems etc with no thought for how squeamish I might be! LOL.

I'm glad that you are concerned about your health. I'm still at my 30s and I would want to be conscious about my health because as what you've said, I shouldn't wait. And yes, high blood pressure can strike anyone at any age. So I think I should have a regular check up. Thanks for this wake up call!

Well, I am still at my 20s, having a great body. But since leaving the school, I seldom do any sports or exercise any more nowadays. It's a horrible thing even for a young guy, right? But I just do not always realize the importance of health when I still own it. Maybe I should try to do some regular exercises. Come on....
Thanks for your sharing. and good luck to your recovery

Oh, P1kie, is that where you've been?
Oh no! I am over 50 and over weight, but being a fe-type-male and regularly having my BP checked, and actually running low most of the time I think I'm doing pretty good - so far.
I do worry, because there's a history of strokes in the family, so I do actually pay attention to these things.

Prevention is better than cure. We should be health conscious. If we are aware of our health, we can stay away from these types of diseases. Regular exercise and intake of healthy food is very essential and it keep us away from major lifestyle disease like BP, cholesterol, diabetic etc. I know that frequent check up from efficient doctors are useful, but--------is it possible for people those who have low income? If the check up is free, people are ready to go to the medical professional.

My father and grandfather both worked hard and got their blood pressure under control. It takes a long time and it isn't easy but they have prolonged their life probably by a long time. I exercise and try my best to work on stress.

Me and my husband both have high blood pressure. I bought sea salt not that it helps as much as I thought. I bake or grill more of the foods instead of frying. I need to lose alot of weight..number 1 on my New Year resolution list. Number two is make sure the weight doesn't find me after I lose it..which is seems to do. I just got something in the mail today about getting a stroke and heart attack screening but I don't have the money for something like that right now. I am just gonna have to start liking salt free and low salt foods..which I can't stand..I have tried.. Stress is also a major factor in my blood pressure..and now..this time of the year it is skyrocketing.

Awesome Ideal Alice!...never hurts to have a buddy system..
@ pikey..I know, but I get so discouraged so easily...and I have no will power to speak of. But I do give it a good try.. I lost 53 pounds last year...and I felt so much better but sadly.. I have put on 30 of those pounds back..Eeks! yea I know.. I need to be globbed over the head... my most problem in the maintaining area.. I can lose the weight..but staying on the true straight and narrow is what I have problems with.

Hello pikey.
To be honest, i am a bit more then i planned - okay, a lot more at the moment . I want and will loose about 15 kg in order for me to consider acceptable by myself. I have about 95kg right now, and i want to go back to 80. One of the main reasons was the job i had the last 9 months, which i finished in the middle of november, that forced me to stay for lots of extra hours and eat a lot of junk food.
I am only 23 now, it should be still fairly easy to loose the extra i gathered in the last year, but i will have to do it slowly in order not to get it back rapidly.

Pikey-
My husband who is only 32 is on bp medication. He was diagnosed two years ago and it's been an ongoing issue, something that will probably be life. So we check his bp daily, etc, etc, etc. Our most recent scare was last month when he ended up overnight for high BP that bottomed out, returned to normal only to cause chest pain that the doctor thought it was his heart. We're still fighting with the VA to get him to his primary for follow-up but he did have a stress test done, but won't know what that has to say until the primary gets him him to be seen. Typical VA.

Hello, Pikey. The thing with high blood pressure is that there are often no symptoms until something goes badly wrong. Last year, I contracted Swine Flu, and had to have the doctor. She was more worried about my blood pressure, which was virtually off the scale at 230/130. I was on the point of a stroke - and not the nice kind of stroke which makes you feel all fruity, either.
Since then, I check my BP regularly. As you say, once you know, you can do something about it. Well done with the weight, but don't lose it too quickly - it's not healthy. Can we have another photo of your six pack when you get there, please?

Oh, be still, my beating heart! Pikey as nature intended - I think I'll have that stroke after all - as long as there's something worth stroking, of course.

I have a belly like this, it is getting me down a bit as i always used to be so thin and very healthy. I now can't fit into a lot of my clothes and my belly stiks out over all my pants and jeans that i wear, some are hard to fasten up. I cannot remember the last time i had my blood pressure taken, i am fat and i am only 33, i went to the doctors recently, he weighed me and checked my height and found that i was overweight but not to the extent of where i could have any medication or other form of help. I know that i need to lose the weight urgently, especially as i am a single dad and my son is only 2 years old. The last thing i want is to have some form of an attack and not be able to do anything and my son would get scared. I do love to walk and i don't eat as much as i once did but the weight just isn't coming off.

You need to address what you are eating and to some extent the time of day that you eat it. Start investing in fresh fruit and vegetables. eat oily fish and chicken. If you must eat bread then eat wholegrain and toast it. Eat heavy at breakfast and light at supper. Try not to snack but if you have to eat something oaty - an oatcake cheese biscuit. If you drive try walking for journeys less than a mile. Get off the bus at the stop before your usual one. Get into the park and throw a ball or frisbee around. Switch off the TV and get out. Even if it's cold where you are. myLot is a great place to seek diet advice ideas etc. Think positive and take action. Good luck.

Thankyou for your comments, i do aim to do something and soon, otherwise i will just get worse. I do eat more later in the day and i know it is wrong to have my tea so late as i have it at 9pm, that means i am really unable to burn off the food t hat i have eaten.

i belong to a family whose size was beyond normal,, my mother, my sister, aunt, cousins, and they became big right after giving birth. my body, i can say was still in a normal shape, (thank God). all i could advise to people out there is to eat more fruits, drink plenty of water and a daily exercise. also you could also see a medical professional so you could be check if you need a medical assistance. ---and just to share, i dont eat junkfoods, street foods for these are cancerous. also i limit myself on dringking sodas. since i can do this, i know you can too. im glad to stay fit. :)

I am guilty myself of living a sedentary life. I see my doctor monthly to check my BP as I am on BP medication. I was warned by my doctor to lose weight otherwise my BP will never go down. I have been on this BP medications for the past 20 over years. I never really take exercise seriously. The temptation to become lazy and avoid any sort of exercise is not physically healthy. Thanks for your reminder. It is better to prevent before anything serious happen to us. The maintenance of our own health should be our first duty.

I'm not quite that chubby, but I am chubby, I'll admit. I'm glad you are heeding the Dr's advice. Exercise is not only helpful to lose weight, but regular excercise keeps the heart muscle strong.
I've hoped that working physically on a daily basis has kept my body healthy and strong, despite carrying a few extra insulating pounds. These few extra pounds seem to insulate me from the winter's ravages. I've tried to lose a bit of weight, and my immune system seemed to suffer, so I have left well enough be.
I admit, however, that I have not seen a doctor for many years, due to the fact, that I haven't had anything truly serious confront me to necessitate it. They would prefer that I came in at least once a year for a check up. Maybe now is a good time to finally do that.
HUGS

Oh, and regarding blood pressure, I don't believe I am at risk for that condition, as when my blood pressure had been taken in previous years, the dr's always noted that it was low, actually. Quote, "Low, but just in the normal range".

I am going to be sixty in another year. I have not heart problems and nothing in my family. I have my check ups and have been told I have a tendency toward high blood pressure. It isn't real bad and I am not real worried. I live a very seditary life. On my bed most of the time working on my laptop or watching tv or both. having severe depression, sleeping problems, panic attacks, S.A.D. and all that I don't get around much especially in the Winter months. Take care.
