You know about the BBC booklist? The BBC claim that most people have read only 6 /of 100/ books form their list. As I scimmed through the list I realized that I hvae fully read more than half of it and I hvae started reading some of the rest. I would really like to copy/paste the list here, but I don't have enough reputation to do so. However, I am curious if any of you are familiar with this list and how many of the books have you read? And which one is your Favorite?

I had never heard of the BBC Top 100 Book List so thank you for this discussion. I did a search and found the updated list here... http://writtennerd.blogspot.com I hope that helps someone. I just did a quick look at the list and can say I have read several of them, don't know how many exactly. I copied the list to have a guide, I'll see how many I have read and will see if I can catch up and read many more. I can say that I have read Wurthering Heights and it is one of my all time favorites, along with The Hobbit and The HandMaids Tale.

This list is from 2003. THere is a new one where most of the books are the same, but for example Harry Potter series are marked as one book and there are some other books added.

I just looked at the list. I've read 19 of the books on it. Out of the ones I've read, my favorite changes depending on mood. But, it's usually a toss up between Jane Eyre and Little Women. Little Women is an old childhood favorite that I re-read at least once a year. But, I think as a character, I love Jane Eyre best, so the book is special to me.

I haven't seen the updated one, maybe you could post the link, when you have a moment? I've seen one a few years back, and it struck me as extremely focused on English-language books. If I remember correctly, very few authors who didn't write in English made it on the list, Tolstoy, Garcia Marquez and Dostoevsky. Surely the top 100 made by such a reputable source deserves to be more universal.

Yes, there are just a few works from non-english authors, but it was to be expected. BBC strike me as quite british-oriented and I am nor surprised at their choice of works. The only links I have with this book list are from some blogs, where people comment on how many of the books they have read. When I try the BBC site I find only the old book lists.

I've read around 30 which is ok. I wanted to read more but I don't think I'll have time this summer considering I have other books to read. 30 isn't that bad for someone who is on the cusp of adulthood! I can't remember the names of the books but I believe all the ones I read were very good, so I don't have a favourite.

Hello, Thewayis. I've actually read around 30 of those books, but I have to say there are quite a few there that just don't appeal to me. My favourites? Definitely the Jane Austen novels. However, the most under-rated author there is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His books are a delight, and I'd urge anyone to read not only the ones on the list, but all his works. I'd say that list is now out of dat - it's time there was a revised version, because some great fiction has been published in the last 7 years.

I've read most of them too, and I don't think I'm all that unusual. I think the BBC's estimate that most people have only read 6 is far off base--I am sure most people have read AT LEAST 10% of them, in high school lit. class if nowhere else.

I've read about 40 of them, and my favourite is Watership Down by Richard Adams, followed by Hitchiker's guide to the galaxy. I know there are a lot of books on there I would never read - they're just not my kind of book.
