Lotto: the Tim Yap saga!

Who in his right mind would endanger the life of another individual by announcing to the whole world the name of the winner of 720+ Million? If you have been hiding behind a VERY big rock, Tim Yap tweeted that the name of the winner is a journalist of the PDI. Saying the actual name of the journalist without regard to the safety of the person and his family. WORSE he had it wrong! The journalist didn't even bet on the lotto, he only confirmed that someone won the lotto because he was covering the lotto betting! Just to be popular, just to be the first to announce it... would you do the same thing if you knew who the winner is?

I probably will not - I am not as big as an idiot as that headline-hugging wannabe socialite Tim Yap. I saw the Inquirer tweet and only an idiot would conclude what he concluded. And he fancies himself a journalist - can't even read properly. Has he ever heard of a lotto winner whose name was announced? They identities are anonymous for security reasons. Most importantly, what benefit could I possibly have in divulging the identity of the lotto winner? I'm not the type to ask for "balato" and other than curiosity, I would rather leave the person in peace. I don't make friends with people so that I could party with him/her. Goes to show what kind of person this Tim Yap is...

I would have to agree with you on this. I heard his excuse that he was just caught up in the moment and was "happy" for the winner. Whats funny is they both work for the same paper, the least he could have done before revising the tweet was confirm it with the person. In addition he claims he is a journalist and he announces something without validating his source! If something happened to Miko Morelos was it? Tim Yap should have been charge with criminal negligence for endangering the lives of Morelos and his family!

I hope he is charged! This would set an example to negligent users of technology. I think all the unnecessary and unwanted attention that Miko Morelos got as a result of Tim Yap's tweet should be considered as damage.

I actually agree with you. The damage has already been done and no amount of apology could restore them. The danger and dread felt by the family of Morelos could not be measured. If he is charged, I would follow that case. It would be a landmark decision, if ever.

This is just one major blooper from this person being a famed one in the entertainment industry I guess he is used to blowing out some unconfirmed information he is getting. But I think he has apologized already for that one and I think he can get away with it already since it may just be a minor mistake in him. I think he learned his lesson on this experience and be careful already especially when blurting it out on the net. which can easily spread out of proportion.

Yeah been distracted by other good paying sites lately. I just tried coming back in here to try mylot once again. I realized that mylot is a lot different from other ptp site. They may pay low but the topics are very flexible. So much about that and I think that Tim Yap being a socialite has an advantage and they could easily get away with it that easy.

It would appear he already has It is sad but people tend to abuse their popularity and influence. I really wanted Miko Morelos to file a case against the guy.

Whether the name named was the lotto winner or not, it is still an immature and irresponsible act to have revealed it. The life of the person named and his family would be put to danger. I have read about this news and I even made a similar discussion. It was a saddening incident on the part of Miko Morelos, the person named as the winner. On the other hand, many would be disappointed with Tim Yap's tactless tweet. I also doubt that he will be receiving many criticisms for what he did.

I agree with you on this. It was really an immature act moreso with the added fact that he claims that he is a journalist. Whether he receives many criticisms or not, I do hope that he has learned his lesson and everyone else that have become aware of this as well. I just hope that a similar incident won't happen when I win the next Lotto jackpot!

He may not have meant the damage but as a journalist he should have been responsible enough to take a moment and think about it before announcing it to the world. The point of it all is that he didn't want the impression that he is not in the loop that he was the last to know thats why he had to be one of the first to announce it even if it was not verified or rather a misreading of the inquirer tweet. Right? Well its just how I see anyways

I can really empathize with the PDI journalist, Tim Yap named as the Lotto winner. How inconsiderate of Tim Yap to name the winner on the internet much more of a hundred million pesos, knowing that here in the Phils., there's a lot kidnap for ransom incidents and scrupulous persons. He endangered not only the life of the said journalist but also of his entire family. He is an irresponsible journalist, not even verifying if it was true or not. Who in his right mind if he won such big amount would like to be broadcast to the whole world or even to the whole country !

Moreso as a journalist he should verify the facts before announcing something and as a colleague, he should have asked the person whether or not he wanted it known. Indeed his entire family was in danger because of his error.

I agree. He should have at the bare minimum, read the tweet properly! As a journalist, he should have been aware of his responsibility and the possible effects of his announcements given the number of followers he has on tweeter.

Probably the guy who won and knew that I know that information will be on the warpath for my blood if I just slip, even casually, that lucky guy's, well...luck. Although I will confess that I need money in my life, I won't stoop to the level that I would actually announce it to the world. If I knew the guy, I would bet my remaining money that the guy is probably still in shock, dazed and utterly confused on what course should be taken. It will be inconsiderate to place more burden and pressure on that person by announcing to the world of the recent development in his life. It his life that is primarily changing and not mine. Also, being the winner is his own business and something that cannot be shared so easily, even if I stand like a relative or a freind. This incident only shows how some people are very inconsiderate of other's plight. Makes one wonder if those people are with green-eyed monsters.

Attention grabbers right? It really was a disgrace specially when the guy is claiming to be a journalist! Journalists everywhere should be insulted of that claim. True he is a celebrity but a journalist he is not. He probably lived with the grinch before But yeah it was really irresponsible.

I am disappointed that Tim Yap actually did this. I met him personally some years ago and he's a nice guy, smart, easy to get along with and he can really blend with people from all walks of life. A person of his stature should have known better. He is a widely followed celebrity. A social network tool such as twitter is now way more powerful in spreading news like wildfire. It would really be difficult to fan the flames once it's out, and the ball of flame just keeps on rolling over. I empathize with the journalist and could offer my prayers for the safety of his family.

It would have been different if he just called someone and told him/her about the identity of the winner, but through tweeter? And you are right is a known celebrity with numerous followers, he should have been responsible enough to know that whatever he announces will have serious ramifications. I do hope he has really learned his lesson and hope that it won't happen again in the future to anyone.
