Noting daily expenses

counting money is good - counting money is good, safe habit

Friends I have the habit of keeping account of my daily expenses, with advancing age ‘forgetfulness’ increases, so I keep a small note book on my shirt pocket and a pen. Whenever I spend some money or receive some money, I note down there, after coming home I note this in a diary. This habit keeps a control over money spent. Another thing whenever I pay or receive money I count the currency notes and coins. My dad used to say, one must count money always and drink water after filtering it. Do you note down your daily expenses, do you find it useful? While receiving or paying money do you count? Have you ever been cheated, because you failed to count? Please share your opinion. Thank you so much in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Hi, Professor2010! I keep noting my daily expenses everyweek now. When I was in university, I always have some money spent without any memory in my brain. So I decided to note them down. Prices rise again here in Beijing ... how can I make living?!

I should keep notes of my spendings and earnings, but I don't. I wouldn't really know if I have been cheated because I never count stuff. I should start doing so though, really.

hi professor this makes me remember something . I had just made a purchase with the c hristmas gift of a one hundred dollar bill. I spent maybe forty doll ars so had six ten dollar bills and some ones I had already had. So the cab fare home with mypurchase came to six dollars. well later I would remember the clerk said those are new tens and will stick together so so be careful. so i counted out what I thought was six ones so when I got inside my apt. withe all my purchase I counted my money and oh wow I only had 5 ten dollar bills so what I had done was given him what I thought were six ones only to realize I had given him 5 ones and what I thought was a one was that crisp ten dollar bill. Be the time I realized what had happened and called the cab company the driver who took me home had gone off duty.well a few days later I bought some groceries and had too many for me to handle on the bus so called a cab. I guess I got the same driver as he helped me to carry all my sacks to my apartment then when I took out the six dollars to pay him, he said happy mothers day and here is the rest of that money I owe you.he gave me four crisp ones those with writing off the six dollar charge made the ten. I thanked him and told him it was nice to meet an honest person. after that I did not only coun t my money closely but made sure when I paid in cash that I was paying just the correct amount with no new bills stuck together.I do note my expenses and how much money I received both as then I know down to the last cent how much I spent and how much I have left.

I have this habit as well. Normally I ask for receipts. If it is an item that I cannot get a receipt with (drink machine) I will write it down just as you are. I save every receipt I get. I have receipts back from 2007 that I guess I need to throw away. My record keeping is simple. I keep the receipts and plug it into my excel spreadsheet. I try to count the money back while the cashier is counting it.

Sir, I do not note daily expenses but all the major expenses are recorded in the excel sheet every month. I always count money before paying or getting it back from others. Thank You for sharing.

Hi there Professor2010! I used to do that since I am the worst when it comes to keeping track of my finances. I am always forgetting what I spent my money on and I usually just ignore it if did not cost much. What happened is that I gave up and left "budgeting" to my husband who is better when it comes to handling money. He is more thrifty too.

My mother had this habit ever since i can remember. At the end of the day she would sit down and write down all the expenses in a diary and in this way she consumed a number of diaries every year as every page would get filled up.Unfortunately neither me nor my brother who lives in Canada have got this habit and we live "Ram bharose".Of course i do count all the money whenever i receive or spend it so that i don`t suffer any losses. At the end of the month i see how much is left in my purse and then withdraw whatever i need the next month.

I really wish I had been keeping track of all my expenses, especially over the last year because I worked for the Census but of course that job is now gone and so much money just flew through my fingers. I had never planned to get to this point without saving something and I am not a frivolous spender but when you don't keep track it's easy to spend way too much. When I start working again I hope I have the discipline to keep track. I know it iwll save me a lot more money in the long run. Congrats to you for being so disciplined.

I don't keep it all written down, but I am extremely anal about checking the balance in our checking account. I keep track of the bills that have been paid through there and I always check it whenever I get back home to make sure that everything is working out the way that it should be. In addition to that, I pay many of my bills online and because of that, I keep a sheet of paper attached to my computer where I am able to note the bills that I've paid and the confirmation numbers in case something happens with one of the bills.

hello professor! well,i actually am noting my daily expenses when i was in my college days. i was thrifty kind of person and it seems like it's nice to note my expenses and daily money matters to see how thrift or spendy type i am. it helps me track my money and see how much i save in a day. but that doesn't take too long. it was just my habit during college days. but then when i graduated, i have no time for that i think. i just keep in mind that i have to be thrifty always, and it did make me realize i have been thrifty anyway,to a point that i haven't eaten sometimes. well,it may sound really impossible to think but i guess i have suffered and made me sick as well. it's not a good thing i have habit of being too thrifty specially to food matters. but then,i had learned my lessons and it's quite normal now. well,i just hope i can earn more and spend more as well. have a great time prof! see you around!

I have to budget. Otherwise I would spend too much. I know I have a certain amount I can spend each day on food, gas, etc. I have spreadsheets on the stuff! And I count the change I get at a store! But the bank is my place to do some serious counting when I get cash. Even though they count it right in front of me I count it again before leaving the building.

I always count my money. I work in my uncle's bar and get lots of tips and of course when you work the register you want to make your money come out even. I also write down all of my expenses for my condo which is like an apartment. That way I know what I need in the way of money each month to pay my bills. Next year my oldest son will start school . So I will probably be out money there. But I look forward to that. My boyfriend (my kids father) and I share all expenses 50/50.

This habit of keeping an account of every penny spent is very good. A habit which I have never been able to cultivate. I have tried many times of keeping a diary with expenses but somehow nothing happens after a couple of days of weeks. As a result of which sometimes I have found that I have withdrawn a huge amount of cash from the bank and do now know where I have spent it all.

Hello my friend Professor2010 Ji, So nice of you for starting such a important discussion. Like my father, I too maintain my accounts book. Some 10 yrs back, I used to maintain in Register/Dairy, but now I maintain in computer .XL sheets. But i never carry any paper or pen to write while shopping, but I do up-datye my datas after arrival to my home. It ha slot many benjfits and mainly being to check expenses and even reduce if any sudden requirement is there. After every year, I take prints and leave them in my register. I have such records and statistics since 40-50 yrs.If there is any ceremony in my home I will keep records such a schildren's marriage etc. I find it as good habit. When my children were small I used to tell them to do this work and I used to reward them monthly. This way they picked up good mathsmatotics and habit of maintaining accounts. Thanks. Take care. May God bless You and have a great time.

Woah you do have a good habit of doing this. I don't do this but there's nothing wrong with my daily expenses either. At my age, I would want to eat anything and I'll just pamper myself. LOL.

I for one hate that habit... I have seen rough life ... by god's grace, today I have enough for my food, clothing, shelter, and medicines. I dont like it when dad argues too much over small amounts. I dont like being very calculating - especially in my stage... who knows what is likely to happen tomorrow... why should I disturb the peace of my home and mind today over trivial things like money which is not the major issue ... is what I think.

Just started last month on jotting down daily expenses though I have a target budget prior to this. But I miss out some expenses so I need to do estimates to check how much I've spent over the days. It's very helpful because I get to see where I need to cut down my expenses and save to more important things.
